Server Recommendations?

Hi.
So I've been playing the free trial and that's going to come to an end soon. I definitely want to buy the game but I'm going to have to wait until Heavensward so I can play on my mac. I figured since there's going to be lots of time in between I should start looking at the forums more.
With all the introductory so that others can give this newb some advice over, I was wondering what server would be fun to play on? I don't think any of my IRL friends are playing or interested TT.TT.
One thing I'm curious about is, is there a server where there's less RMTers?
Another thing that's a bit off topic but still part of being a new player. Recruitment code?

Wow, it's been over 2 years since I did this post. I finally took a look at the forums again and decided to share my experience.
THE SERVER DOESN'T REALLY MATTER! WHAT MATTERS IS FINDING FRIENDS TO PLAY WITH!
Yeah, seems pretty obvious, but I think that's the most important thing when looking for a server.
After a couple of new characters and server transfers, I've found a place in Gilgamesh :)
It's two years later, but once again, thank you everyone who gave me suggestions.

As far as servers with less RMT go, you'd want to try and squeeze on an overpopulated server such as Balmung. As the character creation restriction keeps bots out, overpopulated servers are your best bet - however, getting on them will be a pain, probably.

In case you decide to start on Cactuar despite the fact that it isn't overpopulated enough to cull RMT, feel free to whisper me anytime and I can give you some change to get you started if you like.

How is Cactuar? While I'd prefer not to deal with the rmt tells. In the end I probably won't care. Friendly>less rmt.

Well, I always say "Cactuar best server", but my main reason for choosing this one was just that Cactuars are funny. I can't really tell you how the server fares in terms of friendliness when compared to others, as I haven't spent much time on other servers to get an idea of how things are there. Basically, there are some nice people, there are a lot of okay people, and there are some people that are, well, major jerks. I expect most servers to have good apples and bad apples.

Ahem but anyway. Lich is nice. Times are for the EU since it is an EU server, but that isn't too bad even for me (I play in the US so it's about early morning on the server when I'm on). Mainly English speaking. Smaller server...at least, when I'm on not many people are either. I get a bit laggy at peak times in the cities but no big deal. I find it's pretty friendly here. There's lots of people willing to work with others and help out each other.

Maybe one RMT tell/day? It's petered off a bit honestly. I don't find them all that annoying.

In my experiences Balmung is very friendly. Active endgame & active RP if you want to pursue either, and lots of people just casually playing to befriend. Low RMT. Etc etc.

The downside is it's hard to get on to. If you're in the US, I recommend trying at around 4am, and not on Friday/Saturday/Sunday.

I play in Tonberry, it's a Japanese server but relatively there are a lot of English-speaking players.
Throughout my playthrough, I have never once had received RMT tells. But Tonberry is rather populated, so if you decide to start there, you might have to wait around 4 AM JPT (or any odd hours) during weekdays to create a character...

I'm not sure of the ping if you live in the States, though.

I am also on the Tonberry server! I've been active in three servers prior to settling. Those being Siren, Balmung and Leviathan.

I settled in Tonberry due to the fact that the server was bustling around the time I would settle to play which made it a lot more fun. The other reason I stayed on Tonberry is because I met such friendly people on there as well as a lovely FC (again, been in a couple) I'm not sure about the ping though as I know that I had a friend from the UK playing and he found it quite difficult in raids especially during busy periods. But if you do happen to go to Tonberry definitely send me a tell and let me know! My FC is such a lovely group, willing to accept and help out new and experienced players, which again, makes the game a lot more enjoyable :D

My server can get full on some peak times. Lots of FCs.
