What's the point of coil raids?

Hi,
So im wondering what's the point of the coil raids when you can get all of your gear from the shop. like you can get Item level 130 gear from the shop.

Why get 130 gear from the Coil raids when you can get them from the shop with poetics?

Some pieces may be better than poetics pieces due to secondary stats. In addition, poetics is quite slow for gearing. By mixing both coil and tomestone gear you can gear up faster.

Lastly, the dungeon is host to its own storyline dealing with the events leading up to 2.0, and going through Coil is an accomplishment to be proud of.

To elaborate slightly: Coil (Final coil/savage coil in particular) is currently the hardest content in the game. The accomplishment of completing these raids is commensurated with some gear that has a unique appearance and in some cases titles. In order to get BiS (Best-in-slot), you generally need to mix token gear (currently ironworks) with drop gear.

All that said, it's optional and you can completely ignore it. Secondary stats do not really make that much of a difference and there's plenty of other gear to glamor. But for those that want to challenge especially difficult content, it's there with the rewards that follow.

I'm going with....

Because it's a video game and some people enjoying (ahem) gaming. You know that simple pleasure response one gets from hitting a button and seeing a green light. Of course, Final Coil is a much more elaborate form of this system but it still holds true.

It amazes me that people think the only reason people raid is for gear.

Not sure where your little rant is coming from... Both of us that replied to the OP noted that the accomplishment/challenge is a big part of it. Or if you're directing this at the OP... best to assume he's simply curious. Text doesn't convey tone so well.

As FF14 is indeed a game as you've stated. Playing games for the sake of gaming is redundant, no?

No matter what you do in FF14, it constitutes as gaming, crafting, gathering, dungeons, sitting in Limsa and chatting, stripping butt naked in Ul'dah and dancing for tips, etc.
So, specifically about coils, what motivation other than gear do you have for pursuing it?

The point, for me, is that the fights are fun. I enjoy the mechanics and co-ordination and the thrill of beating something difficult that took a few attempts.

The point is to experience abuse etc from other players? To get stressed? Do something else for a change? Just kidding! Mostly for gear or light farming now.

The redundancy was intended to illustrate my point. Sometimes it seems like the concept of fighting a boss fight (yay! redundancy!) for the funs of it is completely alien to people. I meet far more people interested in loot than I do that simply want to pew, pew for 10 minutes.

I've said it before on this Forum and I'll say it again. SE does not get nearly enough credit for designing fights that can actually be a blast to play.

I think you're taking too much issue with this. OP asked a question, which seemed genuine curiosity. OP got honest answers. Some people love coil, some hate it, all for different reasons which may or may not include gear.
