Healing through hard speed runs

Hi all,

I've been playing the game for just over a month now and had a blast level 1-49 but since hitting 50 things have not been so great. I recognise there are people who have played this game and others like it for years probably but I am still learning the ropes.
I play as white mage, have done the advised cross class leveling to unlock things like swiftcast etc and got my relic. I've mainly been doing the main story roulette and a low level dungeon in the couple of hours I have on an evening.
On the occasions I have gone in to a hard mode dungeon I have been struggling to keep players up due to the sheer amount of mobs that are being pulled. It's my fault... I do always saying in the chat at the start 'I am new here.' Tanks still bundle in and pull everything to the boss.
So really I'm asking for some help on how I can deal with this as I am clearly healing wrong here and would like to know a sufficient rotation for dealing with this please.

You can always ask the tanks to do smaller pulls if you are having problems. But usually mass pull healing usually involves divine seal+regen, divine seal cure and then cure 2 spam or presence of mind cure/cure2 spam and even a benediction if needed, also eye for an eye is valuable with multiple hits. A swiftcast stoneskin can give you a slight breather as well.
The non use of tank CDs lately(or even tank stances) has also been pervaisive so might be hitting that as well. A lot of tanks also seem to expect a whm to holy spam the large pulls so they are stun locked for quite a while and get burnt down faster thus requiring less healing.
You could probably find a few whm mass pull rotations on the forums as well.

Tanks often are a bit headless.... they do big pulls in a 2 monk party and newbie healer then even loose hate on half of the mobs and blame the healer. A FC member just had the issue that the tank pulled a boss without him being there (firsttime run for him and he was the healer)....
Im personally a horrible whm but c2 spam, regen, stoneskins presence of mind and ds as needed and a m2 (when you sure tank has all aggro only!) to prevent other party members from being killed by smaller aoes or random aggro attacks like in bray hm. Put benediction on a trigger button so you can use it if needed. I also recommend the swift + stoneskin method but theres also swift + holy pretty common then top party up and keep mobs on stun with like 3 more holy....
But in the end all up to you as everyone has his own healstyle...

One thing I noticed recently is that there are many WHM doing a Cure3 on tank who is taking high damage...
I guess it's because Cure3 "proc" came up after Cure2, but really, if only the tank is taking damage, DO NOT Cure3. It has a longer cast time for a weaker heal than a Cure2.

Other than what has been said by above posters, I would recommend to always stoneskin at least the tank before the big pulls.

Having good gear also helps. A good main weapon is the most important thing, then body/legs, then head/feet/hands, then belt, and lastly the accessories.

I'm not sure what dungeons exactly you are running, but say, an Atma weapon may not be enough to heal some of the most recent dungeons when doing a speedrun if the tank and/or DPS are not overgeared.




I'm a tank main but i also heal... When I tank (which is like 90% of the time) i always check party composition and the healer's gear to decide how many mobs i'll pull.
Not all tanks do that from what I have seen, though.
I have healed completely undergeared tanks who never use cooldowns too... The problem with keeping these tanks alive is that we would be spoiling them and making them think it's ok to be bad and speedrun and eventually point fingers to healers if things go wrong.

A proper tank will always check if others are capable of speed running and will also test an unknown healer in a smaller pull before going berserk.
I have never wiped in a speedrun when tanking. I rotate CD's, pop multiple when taking too much damage and make certain the healer is near me when starting the run.

I did a 15 min Amdapor Keep(HM) run the other day with 3 FC mates, it was a complete mob massacre. Granted it was a premade group in which we know eachothers' playstyles and knew we could rely on eachother.

As WHM I always assume the worst of DF tanks, I'll assume they are complete morons which do not know how to hold aggro nor how to use CD's. This way I am always prepared for what gets thrown at me. Start with Divine Seal + Regen, Eye for an Eye and then spam Cure 1/Cure 2 to keep him up. If tank really goes low health on the initial pull I might use benediction to buy me a few seconds to start the heal spam

1. Have good gear. It really makes a big difference. If you don't yet... ask the tank to make small pulls, hope they listen.
2. Sprint and stay with the tank.
3. Order is a little bit flexible but E4E (Eye for an Eye) and divine seal + regen.

4. Consider using Holy (don't forget to cleric stance). It's an AoE stun + damage, stun being the important part. You can use Swiftcast to get the first Holy off (judgment call).
4.a. I usually do between 3 and 4 holy's. 3 if it's a warrior/squishy tank. 4 if I have leeway. Doesn't leave me OOM and takes advantage of the stun time.
4.b. If you see the tank popping a lot of DCDs (Sentinel + rampart + foresight for example), or possibly even their invincibility move, this is a great time to cleric and holy. The heavy healing will come when those wear off. If it's a warrior, you can then benediction them to full, just be aware of Holmgang's short duration.
4.c. If you make a bad call, make it a habit to benediction first, then turn cleric off and start healing (1 step vs 2). Just... don't make bad calls too often ~.^

5. If your CDs are down or you don't think the tank will last long enough to get off even one holy, or if you're just low on MP, stay out of cleric. DS is up often, but don't forget about Presence of Mind (can pop this after a regen while waiting on the GCD, since it's an off GCD ability.)
6. If you have no good AoE DPS but the tank does huge pulls anyway... cleric + holy is a judgment call once more. It uses up a chunk of MP, but it stuns things and makes them die that much faster. Either way you're at severe risk of going OOM in this situation; try to practice excellent MP management.
7. Particularly while DS is up, try to cure I and take advantage of Freecure procs for cure II. Judgment call on how squishy your tank is.
8. Remember that Shroud of Saints isn't just for getting MP back; it's enmity management. If you pull hate on something and the tank is struggling, pop it. Do not pop it at the earliest point in a pull, however, as it only halves enmity that you currently have (i.e. if you pop it because you had regen up for a pull and the tank hasn't flashed/overpowered yet, it's not doing much).

Divine seal --> cure 1 or 2 --> regen --> medica 2 (I know it's not efficient,but it is still a regen) --> cure 1 or 2 --> cleric stance --> holy spam 3-5 times --> cure 2 --> cure 1 until pull is over (should be about 2 cures)

Anticipate where your tank is going to end their pull.
Divine Seal, start casting Medica 2 so that it ends shortly after the tank is done with their pull and should have Flashed/Overpowered everything at least once (their names should all be in red). Swiftcast+Med2 if needed.
Cure 2 to top off the tank, if needed.
Regen. Use Eye for an Eye while you're on global cooldown.

The combination of Divine Seal and regens from both Med2 and Regen is amazing. If you can get used to doing it all without pulling aggro or endangering yourself, then I highly recommend following up with Holy spam as long as the regens are going--speeds up runs, stuns the majority of targets so your regens have more time to do their work, and eliminates targets faster so the tank is in less danger and you can calmly heal with cures after the boosted regens are over.

If the mob is still alive after, then Cure/Cure2 as needed. Maintain Regen if you can. Use Presence of Mind if you have to (then pray the tank has the good judgement to not pull that much again because obviously the DPS isn't fast enough to handle it).


Don't always blame yourself. There are PLENTY of bad tanks out there who overpull and just think they're amazing, then blame the healer if they die.
It's bad when a tank stops or slows down a lot in their pulls.
It's bad when a tank doesn't get initial aggro on everything along the way (i.e. gets the monsters' names in red instead of leaving them in orange). After that, it's bad if the tank also takes a long time to AoE them once he's done pulling.
It's bad when a tank doesn't use any defensive cooldowns.
It's bad when a tank doesn't dodge AoEs.
It's bad when a tank is retarded enough to try pulling more when he's already half-dead from what he has.

An ideal tank manages to grab everything without ever stopping, so they take minimal damage along the pull, and you have an opportunity to Cure or re-Stoneskin them as they're heading towards another group. And then they properly use cooldowns instead of sponging up all damage at full strength. Tanks who are extra nice to their healers will also run small circles around the mob; melee DPS may hate it, but if done right, it significantly reduces how much damage the tank takes by forcing monsters to constantly have to try and run around each other to reach the tank again (since monsters don't clip through each other and stack on a dime).


I also note that you're using a Thyrus Zenith. You should still be able to manage a lot, but keep in mind that for all classes, their weapon greatly impacts how much they can do, more than the rest of their gear. How much damage anyone does, how big a healer's heals are, and how easily a tank can generate enmity / hold aggro are all most affected by their weapon's Damage stat. Generally, the higher the item level, the higher the Damage.
So if you can pick up a stronger weapon easily, you may want to use that for the most part until your relic is caught up to it.

Let them die. Tanks don't set the pace, healers do.
