Gathering
I am a gatherer at heart. I have no intention of creating my own crafts as I have a friend who can supply me with what I need.
So my question is this. I am new to retainers and the game as a whole and need to know what I can do with a retainer. In SWTOR I sent my crew out on missions to give me gathering materials that i then sold on the auction house. Is this how retainers work in the game? Are their different classes and such? Thank you in advance because I ma having trouble understanding the websites I have been reading DoL and something else they call it.

A retainer is capable of having any class that you also leveled. They will be able to level up via ventures as well, but with a cap of [your level in that class -5]. If your class is level 49, they will be capped at 44. However, at 50 their cap also becomes 50.
Their are 2 types of retainer classes: gatherers and disciples of combat. What differs between the two is the type of items they can retrieve from their ventures.
It's a good idea to read/check out the retainers themselves, as apart from some high level things (rare items you can obtain at lvl 50); its a very easy to understand concept.

Should also point out that leveling a retainer with a class you have already leveled is not enough.
At least with the case of fishing. They cannot go on gathering ventures for Fish you have not yet caught yourself. I believe the same holds true for botanist/miner.
TBH their best use (miner/botanist) for me is to gather shards/crystals. As those are items I don't feel like gathering myself. And even a lvl 50 gathering retainer will only pick up 30~ of an item within a 40min-60min time frame. You can get the same amount gathering them yourself in 60 seconds if you use King's Yield II on a +1 attempt node.
But items like Red Coral or Rothlyt Oyster or Razor Clam, definitely is nice having a retainer steadily bringing some of those in for good profit craft selling. Not to mention ***** *****s, that's big profits if you sell them straight to market board
*secrets !_!

DoL means Disciples of Land or a gathering class the other one you probably came across in DoW/M which means Disciples of War/Magic. I'd recommend having one Disciple of Land and one Disciple of War/Magic depending on your main fighting class say it be Paladin (gladiator) for example I'd choose for my retainer to be Paladin so for the most part the gear that I get from my main class when I our grow them I can just equip them to the retainer.
