Crash: Could not detect DirectX device.

Details:
While playing the game I will randomly get a crash, where the game freezes or a moment, then closes out and it says "Could not detect DirectX display device." My display doesn't shut down or show any errors and my graphics card shows no errors or faults. However, the crash only occurs while I am running, and seem to be triggered by me changing direction.

Steps:
After it crashed, the game closed with a box that came up that said "Could not detect DirectX display device."

Date & Time:
It occured at 11:35 PM & 7:24 PM. It has happened several other times in the last 48 hours (I just started playing the game). I am in the same time zone as Tokyo.

Frequency:
Regularly, but not predictable. No clear pattern of "why".

Are you running in full screen or windowed mode?

The Direct X errors I've noticed happen when a program in Windows temporarily take focus off your game window. This is most common in full screen mode. For instance if your Instant Messenger or Antivirus application pops up an alert message from the taskbar. Also make sure you aren't accidentally bumping the Windows key on your keyboard.

not to sure about Nvidia cards as i use ATI on this build but there was a bug that caused this to happen. i agree with what shift is saying above, you wanna check to see if you have the latest drivers for your card as this will fix bugs with any luck^^

If your laptop has an IGP you will have to disable Aero to play the game without that crash happening all the time.

This happens to me while in windowed mode only.

I notice when I disable aero I can run the game windowed for a longer time, but as soon as I enter a more graphic intensive enviroment like the Black shroud it will show the error. I can play the game Full screen with all settings maxed, except AO just fine.

I defenitely wish I could play windowed =/

Windowed basically fries your GPU. Everyone has this problem and that's why people are so furious about the alt-tab issue.

I had this bug with my GeForce card too (different model though), you should try the latest driver, it's all good for me now.

I'm not sure what you mean IGP. Can you tell me how to find out if I have one?

As to windowed/not windowed, I don't play in Windowed mode. I play Fullscreen. And no, I'm not having any popups. Today, for the first time, when it gave the error, NVidia Control Panel said that the display driver did fail.

In other words, this moved from a game issue to a display driver issue. I just found out there is a newer version available... once it's downloaded and installed I'll update if that provides a fix.

I updated my graphic's card driver and the game still crashes. It doesn't give the same error message. Instead, now it just freezes up, windows says "This program stopped responding. Do you wish to close the program?" and then it closes it automatically.

Now, my current driver is 3.8.812.0 for my NVidia card.

Your driver version sounds a little... off? I don't know if your laptop is different, it was 270-something with the DirectX bug for me, and the latest version is 280.26 for your GTS 360M, download it here:
