So, here's why:

1) Run a dungeon 15 times, get solid scale mail. (yay!)
1a) Make a HQ item after 50 synths (yay!)
2) Get the spritbond to 100% and break it into materia (optional, you can break something else or buy the materia)
3) Place 5 materia into the item and fail on the 4th or 5th, lose the solid scale mail or HQ item in the process.
4) Repeat steps 1-3 50 times for every item you need from every single class you have leveld.

Get ready to do the same content over and over and over and over and over again everyone.

You are going to need to to max stats on gear.

Also:

LoL @ when they release gear better than what you have on. Start all over again from square 1.

Why would you use HQ gear for Materiasynth's at all?

You would put the best materia into the best item to have the best weapon or armor.

Goal:
Crab Bow+3 and 5 +5 STR materia in it.

So, get a crab bow +3, start adding materia to it:
STR +5 Success!
STR +5 Success!
STR +5 Success!
STR +5 FAIL + Break Crab Bow +3

Start over: Remake Crab bow +3 and get a set of +5 STR materia again.


Thats just an example. Personally I find the system a good time filler. A decent reason to do the dungeon 200 more times. Its not enough to just get the gear anymore, you now need to get it, spiritbind it and break it, or fill it with a bunch of level 4 materia and chance losing it.

Or you could just wear it with no materia in it I guess.

Correct.. you would break the +3 Bow. So i would use NQ, since...

When turning weapons/armor into materia, it will not matter if the weapon/armor is HQ or not. Similarly, when adding materia to weapons/armor, it will not matter whether the weapon/armor is HQ or not. (NQ items will be useful when mass producing materia.)

No, im talking about putting materia INTO the HQ bow. Not breaking it down.

You break your HQ crab bow putting materia INTO it and have to start over.

Yeah, it just might rage some people to see 2-5 +3 crab bows break because of materia.

or any item for that matter.

And dungeon gear will be especially difficult to fill with materia since you must first get it with a low droprate, then fill it.

If you don't want to do it, just buy it from someone who does.

Oh, dont get me wrong; I'm not complaining ^^

I really can't see people doing it all the way to 5 materia if the risk is very high (unless there's some justifiable profit to be made from the end result). Would be neat if they provided some large gil sink or something to improve the chances of socketing (is that the term here?) materia. Would have to be a serious sink to justify the result if it's good though.

I thought unique/untradable stuff like the dungeon drops wouldn't work for that?
