I'm a bit confused when it comes to loot in a dungeon. At times I get the notification of loot and get Need, Greed, and Pass as options. I'm not sure how this works. I assumed Pass means to skip an item, but I'm still trying to figure out Need and Greed. I thought they were both the same thing, except Greed guarantees that you get the item. But there were times when I picked Greed and it was passed onto another player, as if I passed it. So, is Need given to the player, Greed a randomizes taking or leaving something, while Pass just...passes something up? Who can explain this?

Need is an option that only appears if you can equip the item on the job/class you are on. Need lots take priority over all other lots, however, if someone else can and does hit Need then whoever rolls the highest Need number will get the item. Everyone in the party can greed any item. So if no one has hit need, it will go to whoever has the highest greed lot. Pass does mean that you do not lot on an item at all.

The item will only be given to one player, so there is nothing you can choose that will always guarantee you get it. For Pass, you're correct. That means you don't want the item. If everyone chooses Pass, then the item vanishes without going to anybody.
The distinction between Need and Greed is who gets the chance to roll for the item. You can only select Need if the item is designed for your current class. (For instance, as Archer, you can select Need if the item is designed for DoW classes that fill the DPS role. You cannot select Need for tank or DoM items.) Anyone who wants to can select Greed.
If anyone selects Need, then only those players who selected Need get a chance at the item. For example, if a DoW-DPS gear piece drops and the Archer and Pugilist both select Need, while the Gladiator and Conjurer select Greed, then the Archer and Pugilist would roll for which of the two of them gets the item. The Gladiator's and Conjurer's Greed choices wouldn't count, because Need always wins over Greed.
If *nobody* selects Need, then there's a roll between everyone who selected Greed, and the player with the highest roll gets the item. (This could come up either if none of the players are on the class(es) the item is designed for, or if the player whose class it is for already has the same item or something better.) -

Naria and Niwashi fail to mention that items are made for SPECIFIC JOBS/CLASSES. Archer/Bard and Rogue/Ninja can need on most things that have Dexterity, while Pugilist/Monk and Lancer/Dragoon can need on Strength(with their own variations, usually Striking(PUG/MNK) or Maiming(LNC/DRG)), Thaumaturge/Black Mage and Arcanist/Summoner can need on Intelligence items, Conjurer/White Mage and Scholar can need on Mind, while Gladiator/Paladin and Marauder/Warrior on Vitality/Parry. Additionally, all classes/jobs can have specific weapons for them they can need on. GLA/PLD get swords and most shields(VIT/Parry), CNJ/WHM get wands and some staves and some shields(MND), THM/BLM on rods and some staves and some shields(INT), ACN/SMN/SCH get books(SCH get the Mind books while ACN/SMN INT), ARC/BRD bows, ROG/NIN knives/daggers, PUG/MNK fists/claws/etc, LNC/DRG spears, MRD/WAR axes.
NIN/MNK also shares Crystal Tower 1 & 2 gear, aka Labyrinth of the Ancients and Syrcus Tower, and maybe BCoB/SCoB gear. -

Need: Everyone that is doing the instance on a class listed on the item (above the level and below the item level) rolls a number between 1-100 on the item. These take priority over Greeds. Whoever gets the highest Need # gets the item, hands down.
Greed: Everyone in the party rolls a number between 1-100 on the item. If nobody rolls Need, then whoever had the highest Greed gets the item. If someone rolled Need, all Greeds are invalidated.
Greed doesn't guarantee the item, because it's "I want it" not "I need it." I'm quite fond of this system myself, besides the fact that I greed on things I want for glamour (healing glamour, while on a healing class that can Need on it, because glamour gear should be fair game) and I watch someone with an i130 headpiece Need on a i80 headpiece. -
03-08-2015, 08:21 PMNiwashiWell, not exactly all listed on the item, since what's listed refers to who's allowed to wear it rather than who it's intended for. On the nicer gear set pieces, these will generally be one and the same, but there's some pink Aetherial gear that's good enough to be in a loot roll, but still has the same settings as its crafted equivalent. On some of this, gear intended for magic classes is listed as "All classes" because anyone is allowed to wear it. If, however, its stats are intended for casters, then only casters can roll Need for it. The same situation comes up with gear that lists tank classes as well as LNC/DRG, but for which it's either the tanks or LNC/DRG (most often the later) who can roll Need for it, based on what stats it has.Quote:

By stating "currently designed for your class" it covers all gear, and not all monk is striking, not all drg is maiming. And, parry, as a secondary stat is not determinant of whether or not it goes to a tank, but that it has vit. You provided specific examples, yes, but your claim that something was left out is false. Barr/nin might be able to roll need on dex? They will always be able to, but dex is also the only thing they can roll need on. Same with mnk/drg in regards to strength. Your explanation needs a little reword in as well.Quote:
