The rather harsh posting restrictions.

I think it would be helpful for the community if there was a sticky in general mentioning these. Especially for new players, since apparently anyone below level 50 is restricted from posting in a pretty harsh fashion?


I couldn't find any post on the topic myself, so I was very much surprised to counter a posting limit. My first forum ever where I actually hit one. (or knew one existed! :o)

The reason threads are posted as response is because posting a thread does not follow the same posting restriction. I could post the thread while still being post restricted~

While a good idea the mass of the players rarely read anything like that until it actually happens to them and then 9 times out of 10 they make a post about it before first searching and seeing if it's been asked/answered.

I think the forums in general need an upgrade with restrictions removed. The 1000 char limit you can bypass by editing your post always cracked me up too, either put a char limit or don't, not an artificial one you can bypass by editing.

That stupid character limit serves absolutely no purpose at all, except for getting on our nerves every damn time we want to post something longer - explanations, ideas, etc. Having to post a small part of the whole text, only to "go back" and edit it and paste the rest and post again - it simply is nothing but annoying. Not to mention some devs, even Yoshi himself, post such long texts sometimes that it is very clear it can be bypassed; it screws only with people who would actually like to express their opinion in a meaningful way.

I was doing the usual type it all out, copy, and paste into the edit box to get around the character limit, but the CTRL+C on this keyboard is iffy so I ended up losing the entire post when I tried to edit. Not so bad for a 1001 character post in General, but pretty terrible when you're writing essays over in Lore.

I retyped and revised a bit more, ultimately resulting in a clearer post, but it's still a terrible thing to go through.

Blame the morons who flamed up the Beta Test forum - originally the main FFXIV forum and the Beta forum did not have these restrictions... until just prior to phase 2 of the Beta test, when there was a mass influx of new testers, who, were a little too excited about being selected and thus spammed the Beta forum with stupid "hello world" threads. In an attempt to bring some order to the chaos SE added posting restrictions.

And possibly in an attempt to stave off any chance of a repeat happening at launch, similar restrictions were also added to the main FFXIV forum, which until then was only available to version 1.0 players. Really, the restrictions aren't too difficult to deal with (really, does anyone need to post a thousand whine threads complaining about how the RNG sucks?).

Besides, this is SE's forum, not a fansite - they can administer it any way they see fit. This isn't a democracy. Basically, paraphrasing Zidane in FFIX: "It's SE's way or the highway." ;)

I hardly post on here because of these restrictions. Even as I type this I'm not even sure if I'll be able to post it. So many times I try to add to the conversation just to find out...oh....I can't post yet.

Then I tried to figure out why I couldn't post, the message wasn't clear. Was I temp banned? Too many downvotes? Do I need to get to level 50 to post more than once per hour? What's the deal? Looked around the forums, couldn't find any answers. I honest to God started thinking I was banned or something.

I've never used a forum that had such strict restrictions!

Not sure what's more annoying, the restrictions or the fact we've never once heard a good explanation from the bigwigs on why it was implemented. I'm leaning towards the latter though.

If you think the posting restrictions are bad, wait until you get to post a grand total of 0 because your opinion that "Fluffy kittens are cute and cuddly" offended someone and you get permad for 'creating a hostile environment' or some such.
