Female Chocobos?! - Golden Saucer & Ishgard

Hi,

I'm not sure if I missed something in the cutscenes or dialogue last night when I was going through the Chocobo racing section of the Golden Saucer... But it was my understanding that every Company Chocobo was male due to Ishgard having exclusive rights on breeding them, and only exporting males to control this.

How did the Manderville family get access to female Chocobos?

There was a Gridania quest (think you may have to have started there?) in which a female chocobo was "stole" from Ishgard during the Calamity, so I assume all the current female chocobos are from that lineage. That might explain the potential for natural colour changes; they're all inbreed to high heck.

They probably just went to Ishgard and bought some. Who in their right minds would be brave enough to say "no" to Julyan Manderville?

Pre-Calamity merlwyb had a female (battle type?) chocobo named Victory. Prior to when Ishgard closed their gates (meaning no trade, etc) they may have had a monopoly on high quality Chocobo, but after they became isolationist the other city-states got them somehow, maybe illegally.

Aditionally, these are race chocobos. And it seems like chocobo racing has been popular by wealthy uldahn for a very long time. I wouldn't be surprised Godbert got his chocobos from Uldahn chocobos

The logo shown before a race has "Moogle's Gift Mounts" on it, so I'd assume the majority at least come from Bentbranch, ours at least come from Bentbranch.

Went back an checked, the quest I'm thinking of is Leia's Legacy, which was part of the Main Scenario for Gridanians (so easily missed). It actually makes it sound more like Ishgard has a monopoly on the knowledge on how to successfully hatch an egg, rather than a monopoly on female chocobos;

The quest NPC himself was from Ishgard though, so that explains why Moogle's Gift Stables can successfully raise Chocobos now.

Thinking back, the New Years event had Chocobo Breeders and a female Chocobo mentioned in it as well;

Gods bless ye, dear! I was this close to giving up hope altogether. Ye see, ever since we got here, poor ol' Betsy here's been acting odd. One minute she was up, the next she was down...and she's been down ever since.

What worries me most is that she only seems to be getting lower. She's right off her food, she can't get any sleep, and her pitiful whimpering's enough to break yer heart. If she could just get some rest, it might give her a bit of energy back, but...

Seems Chocobo Breeding has been going on for a while outside Ishgard... Seems to be more of a case of Ishgardian Chocobos being the only ones reared for combat, with merchant and now race ones being breed at Bentbranch.

Actually there are several breeds.

Rounseys, jennets, and destriers. Same as in XI. Rounseys are the small ones that Lalas ride, destriers are the huge ones that Roes ride, and the rest of ride jennets.

In addition we now have the two person chocobos. I am sure this is yet another breed.
