does playing this game on a PS4 controller put me at a disadvantage ? im wondering as a tank, if I can effectively respond to threats fast enough and how am I going to hotkey all my abilities if I can only use my controller buttons? I am already having difficulty targeting enemies. My friend also told me I can have a controller and a keyboard plugged into the PS usb ports so I can type in chat and still use the controller, or do I have to use a mouse with a keyboard?
I don't play on PS4, but on the PC I tank and swear by the controller. The cross hot-bar works very well, especially if you seperate in-battle and out-of-battle actions (can go into more detail if you wish). Targeting can be a bit of an issue, but you'll get the hang of it.
I will say this though: Turn on legacy controls ASAP.

At most with tank classes, you'll need two hotbars, and possibly a macro or two to easily switch between them.

Character Configuration > Hotbar Settings > Expanded Hold Controls
You can have up to 32 actions/macros set up doing this, you currently only have 28 class/job/cross skills you can use as a PLD in PvE if you add in LB. That leaves you 4 more for tagging/targeting mobs.
I'm also on PC with gamepad, and have my F1-F12 keys bound to actions. I have more than enough buttons for any job.
