ps3 to ps4 transfer

Ok I'm having some issues here and I was hoping someone could help. My brother bought his PS4 yesterday and for some reason downloaded the FFXIV demo onto his ps4. Obviously things weren't working right at this point. So this morning when I got to start working on it I logged into the SE account and did the ps3 to ps4 transfer and got a 12 digit code. Went to redeem it on the PSN and it said it had already been used. (also the email I got with the code said it expired on December 31 2014) After doing some searching I found out this was because of the demo being on there probably. So I logged into what he had and said I have an existing squeenix account logged in no problem and the next part says that "If I wish to import preexisting characters not to select this option" and it has me go back to the previous screen to select another option, problem is there are no other option on that screen. Any info would be appreciated!
Note: he is using the same PSN account on both the ps3 and 4.
