Got some Thav onion seeds... now what?

So I've recently started gardening for the FC. Read up on what plants to cross with others, how to garden efficiently, and luckily my first attempt was a complete success: three shiny new Thavnarian onion seeds.

Now... what should I do with them? Should I try to cross-breed them for something else while I grow them? Should I put them in Shroud soil so I can maybe get more than one?

Plant them next to Mandrakes, using Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil. Gives you Mimett Gourds if you're lucky, which can be used to produce more Thavnairian Onion seeds.

And as mandrakes are 5 days you can plant a second set after you harvest the first.

That's the max time assuming no fertilizing.

That's the base time, not the max time. Each fertilizer takes about an hour off grow time, and grow time is slowed when they are sickly.

I'm glad you posted that, I have four Thav Onion seeds I've been trying to decide what to cross with (I checked out the gardening guides but for what's the best thing to cross Thav onion seeds with, it confused me). I noticed on MB that the seeds are selling for > the onions themselves, which told me that they had to be lucrative for crossing somehow.

Actually, I took advantage of that slight price difference, in that I had ended up with 5 Thav Onion seeds from crossbreeding, and planned to give an onion to someone in FC that had given me lots of Grade 3 Thanalan Soil. But since I just need 4 Thav Onions for the crossbreeding, rather than have the 5th one sit in my garden growing for about a week at some point, I just gave her the seed, told her to sell it on MB, buy an already-grown onion with the proceeds, and pocket the difference.

Also regarding fertilizing and how it changes grow times, here's something I've done that others might find helpful if it hadn't occurred to them. I wanted to cross two plants– one expensive and fast growing, one cheap and slow growing- and that presented a difficulty in that if I had to harvest the expensive one first, I wouldn't be able to simply plant four more in their place as readily as I can with cheap ones I can get from MB. No problem there, I simply made sure to only fertilize the slow plants, but tend all of them, until it was clear that the slow ones passed the faster ones buy and that they would still come up first if I went back to fertilizing the entire garden.
