Using Retainer Fantasia

Hello, quick question.

I thought I'd use a Retainer Fantasia to alter my retainer's appears (FemRoe weren't around yet when I acquired both Retainers).

Well I've just tried to use the Fantasia item, and it's telling me to remove my retainers gear.

Both my retainers are lvl 50 GLD and MNR. If I remove their weapon/tool, won't that reset their class to 0?

Has anyone experienced this? I don't want to risk losing their levels for insignificant aesthetic purposes. Not sure how to proceed
