How do we judge our own performance?

Originally playing tank, but I'm leveling all my other classes now for 3.0, and this has been bugging me to no end. As tank and healer it was easy to judge and I really didn't find a need to get some solid numbers on DPS. However, as DPS, how are we supposed to know our own performance? Has the official stance changed any since 2.0 launch?

So a question to the producer: how are we supposed to judge our own performance as DPS?

Are you dying?
Are you dodging AOEs?
Are you getting hit by stupid shit you should of easily avoided?
Have you read up on the respective "official" threads of the DPS job you're using and can press a rotation?
Can you still perform said rotation whilst dodging AOEs and performing mechanics without failure?
Are you parsing, on a dummy, around the average DPS of said job under certain iLvls?

If you check yes to all of above, you're doing better than 70% of players already and I'd say your performance is good enough.

Well all of the above except the parsing, rotation wise I'm still leveling so most of the stuff are irrelevant for now.

Is a 3rd party parser officially allowed? I remember back during launch it was kind of something you just pretend didn't exist. What's the official position on dps parsing?

It's technically against the ToS to use a 3rd party tool like a parser.

That being said, as long as you do not talk about parsing with random strangers in-game, or use parsing results to harass other players, then you should not get banned for using it. Everyone and their mother parses, so do not be scared to using programs like ACT, LogRepV2 or FFXIV-App (which I advise against using due to a specific widget). Everyone discusses parsing results on these forums without bans now... Wasn't like that a year ago unfortunately.

What about those of us that are console players and have no access to a parser?

They ask to FC buddies?
No other choice, there is no parser on ps3-4.

I really hope the add-on framework isn't delayed just because they're trying to find a way to block people from making in-game parsers. Parsers are seriously such a good tool in understanding one's own performance.
