It's not a perfect solution by any means, but if you are on PC, you can see your latency by loading Resource Monitor (resmon from search/run box), and expanding the TCP section and looking for the ffxiv entry.
Otherwise, you can just ping the lobby servers to get some idea. This can be done from a DOS prompt (cmd in search/run box) or from the terminal/tools screens in your routers. The registered DNS names currently assigned to the servers in Canada:
neolobby02.ffxiv.com
neolobby04.ffxiv.com
neolobby06.ffxiv.com
(ones in Japan use odd numbers 1, 3, 5)
I would fly down to Japan and hug every Dev responsible for installing a Ping Meter, should we ever get one.
I am perfectly ok with playing ANY MMO with latency. Hell, i began raiding on WoW on Dial-up.
The reason i coudl do that there is the Ping Meter. I can see to the exact millisecond how far ahead of the game i need to play.
Here in XIV, i know i have an average ping of 250.
But it fluctuates. Its never stable for some reason, despite being on a 100/40mbps Fiber service. I would like to know how far its fluctuating and when its doing it and the current Send/Recieve fails in every way to inform me of whats going on.
It's really suspicious how the devs tried to hide the ping from us. It's logical I guess with the servers located in another continent if you play from Europe. The average EU ping is 200ms while other games which have their servers located in EU have an average of 100ms. So I guess we won't see an "official" in-game way to see our pings. SE tries to hide this nasty dirty small detail. I like how we have EU servers listed which are located in Canada. I hope they open soon the EU data centers.
Even in the US the latency is pretty bad. We have near zero margin for error with some mechanics, especially if we're located at the center of an AoE. I would also LOVE to know my ping.
I'm absolutely not saying our latency is as bad as AUS players. You guys get the rather dirty end of the stick... <.<
Would be a nice minor update. However, question is of course, will the stand response "PS3 limitations" prevent this? It would be an additional UI feature after all.
