Yoshida's Emphasis on PvP

Has anyone else noticed that he seems to be saying PvP a lot in interviews? Is this a translation bug? Because it's making me far too anxiously happy. Clearly there are thoughts for even open world PvP from what I have seen.

During Alpha/Beta people were always saying there would never be PvP. And even after launch this continued for a while. Now with the recent Famitsu interview and others in the recent past it looks indeed like a distant reality.

Is anyone else excited for this?

I loved the PvP games in FFXI, they were insanely fun. I really hope something like that comes out except with good rewards so people have an incentive to do it.

I don't recall him saying PvP at all in any interviews.

I'll have to go digging for the interviews but he has talked about PvP several times over the past few months. As far as I remember, expect something similar to Ballista, Brenner, etc. But most likely with PvP related gear rewards. I believe he wants it to be "battlegrounds" -esque, so no open world PvP, purely consensual.

PVP, Where??! Give me that!!

I'm guessing PvP wont come until after the new classes and balancing.

He mostly has just mentioned it regarding what kinds of things he has done as a player in other MMOs. He's listed his playing of many other MMORPGs as credentials when discussing how he can fix this game, so people are always asking him questions about what he likes to play and such.

I was curious too, though, if his repeated mention of the term "PvP" was a kind of hint that he'd like to introduce it to FFXIV some time in the future.

I don't think they've ever said anything about open-world PvP and if they did I certainly wouldn't be at all excited for it. It would ruin the game. Imagine trying to gather with no restrictions open-world PvP, you'd just be a sitting duck for gankers. Popular grind spots would turn into battlefields instead, allowing no one to actually grind there. Aion had a lot of problems with this, people can and will grief others constantly if you let them. Aion had a problem with this for some time, not sure how it is now. Certain areas were unplayable because of a team of jerks on my server, areas you needed to be in to progress.

Instanced things such as set matches and duels I'm perfectly fine with. Arena style free-for-alls in designated areas I'm perfectly fine with. Larger group PvP versions of these things, 100% okay with. Anything where you cannot be killed out of nowhere I'm fine with.

So all in all, done right I'm excited for PvP. If it's open-world with no restrictions I'll likely have to quit the game.

lol, pvp..

As slow and unresponsive as this game is, pvp as no place anywhere near it.
