Idea against Undercutting at the Marketboard (The next.. )

Hello fellow Eorzeans,

after having another raging episode on my end after seeing the Marketboards this morning I ask myself why people would undercut massively.


I'm not talking the 17.000 to 16.999 or 16.500; Hell even 13.000..
No I'm talking about dropping from 17.000 down to 10.000 or even lower.
Everyone else is adjusting prices - I'm not. If I see im beeing undercut by 1Gil I dont give a damn.
If I list up an Item; I match the current price best price and just wait and see.
I dont need to undercut my competetors because I know that this would ruin the marketprice.

Last Sunday, Ehcatl Sealant was listet dof ~329.000Gil; Right now its at 298.000 because ppl keep underbidding themself. So before I start a tl:dr;

Can't we just invent a system that will stop undercutting to a minimum price
that will adjust itself daily/weekly and is beeing calculated through
recent sales in GIl, Quantity and influenced by the Number of demands and suppliers?

I'm not going to say it. On that note though, maybe people are just liquidating their assets. If I need to free up room quick, I'll do whatever it takes.

People undercut, because they want to, and there are many ways around it. It's no big mystery why the popular items will have more competition. You'll just have to think of your own creative strategies to differentiate yourself from your competitors.

And yes, there are things that the dev team can do to improve the market, but I don't think that restricting prices is one of them.

If they did want to do something about free re-listings, they could introduce a graduating re-listing fee. ie 1st time = free / 2nd time = 100 gil / 3rd time = 1,000 gil etcetera.

But ya, gotta relist if you want to stay competitive in the current market we have. Just the way it is. Heck sometimes I'm trying to drive the prices down far enough to buy and resell. Some people are really irresponsible with their re-lists. Those are the people I really like at times lol.

If there was an in built system to stop undercutting, this would in turn make anything you wanted to buy more expensive. So unless you never buy anything (which would mean you don't need gil anyway) you'd be no better off in the end!

Best way? Bring back the auction system. The purchasing players can only see the last winning bid. Sellers can do one of 2 things. Be cheap and place an expensive item on the MB for 1 gil HOPING, a buyer won't guess 1 gil, and the seller makes a crap ton of profit WHILE simultaneously shorting the "fees". OR, the seller puts up a price they think is fair and there is no undercutting.

What I also think would help some, maybe, is not having the most recent, attempting to sell, seller placed at the top of the MB when the price IS the same as another original seller. That has to be the f*&king most ridiculous and a$$ backwards thing, I have ever seen. This would allow people who were there FIRST, to sell their items FIRST. There by allowing them to sell and not get frustrated and therefore, undercut the rest of the market.

IMO undercut is always there, this system just makes it visible.

If it is auction house and you don't know how to undercut,
your item will keep sitting there while undercutters keeps selling for the same or higher price as you listing.

Now at least, you know what's happening ^^;

Personally I feel you should never be able to undercut lower than 1% of the item being sold (unless that's less than 1 gil, at which point 1 gil is the lowest). It's selling for 100K? You can only lower that price by 1K. Selling for 10K? Can only drop it by 100 gil. Selling for 1k? 10 gil. 100? 1 gil. You get the picture. It prevents a massive amount of undercutting at its roots, while at the same time still being effective the higher the cost of things. Then again, what do I know? I just give out ideas.

Bah. This is the nature of capitalism. Undercutting happens. As long as there is only ONE market to buy and sell your goods you are at the mercy of others selling in that same market.

The only alternatives would be to (revert to 1.0) and have multiple, separate markets (ugh) or the afore mentioned auction system.

No upvote here. The market regulates it's self appropriately. There will be undercuts, but there will also be gouges. It all balances out in the end.

I would say that, except I've seen stuff go from 16K down to 3k, due to undercutters. And I'm talking huge undercutting over time. Looking at the many amounts in there, you'll see good undercutting practices, such as 1-500 gil, then suddenly a dramatic undercut as things drop by 2-4k. And then it takes the prices weeks to go back up. I don't know about you, but I don't like it when I have to wait weeks for something to sell that should have sold within a day just due to insane undercutting by idiotic people who apparently wish to LOSE money than gain it.
