Average Item Level Not Good Enough?

hello. the Average Item Level needs some evaluation. just run Syrcus Tower and a tank had an IL110 weapon/shield, IL100 belt and 3 IL120 accessories. everything else was white and BELOW lv50. all-in-all this tank did not belong in Syrcus Tower.

i don't know what to suggest. and only have one kind-of idea.


i think maybe link some slots together. usually speaking the more important pieces are the body pieces. they have higher stat yields and provide important defense. defense not only important to tanks, but especially so.

the link will see there is big item level difference between body pieces and accessories. and it should lower that accessories contribution to your Average Item Level. i don't know where weapon/shield fits in.



in any case, i don't know much here. but i know the current system to calculate AIL is flawed. and it is possible for a players AIL to NOT represent their actual combat capabilities.

They clearly don't care, as they believe spiritbonding in content is an unmitigated win, and if you don't like it, well, hey. They want you to carry people. So, carry them.

well, as far as i know, this particular person was not there to spirit bond. he only had one high quality item. and none of them had materia slotted. anyhow, i realize the way things is calculated is working as intended as per how it was programed. but the point is is that this is no longer good enough. either people realize this and take advantage of it on purpose, or even it's on accident. an improvement to the way item level is calculated will help prevent people with less then sub-par gear from entering places they don't belong... yet. having sub-par gear is bad enough. but at least having the IL45/55 gear from your job quest is better then what he had. (which is still below sub-par for that instance)

in any case, i don't think a depreciation value starting at a difference of 21 item levels or higher would be too strict. so like if you have on the left IL100 gear and on the right IL120 accessories, you are okay. but if either side has a greater difference, then one of the pieces will contribute less to your AIL. this just an example, though.



either way, i don't know if Square Enix plans to refine the way AIL is calculated or not. but it would be nice to see it become intuitive, so people can't misrepresent their actual combat capabilities.

Agree with the Average Item Level needs some evaluation.

Technically if you really wanted to be hard on it, it could take an average based on both the mean (what it does now) and the median (the actual ilevel of the middle item if you lined them up by item level.) presumably the median requirement would be lower by some number of ilevels.

That said, not sure if it is so much of a problem that such a measure would be neccesary.

Adding various weights to the calculation would be appreciated, such that most of your average item comes from your weapon and your five main armor slots. I would say probably... weapon is 30% (20 for mainhand, 10 for shield for PLD), each main armor piece and belt are 10% each, and accessories account for 2% each. Something like that.

It should just change IL requirement to min MAIN STAT requirement

That still doesn't take into account which pieces are the most important to your effectiveness.

That misses the Damage stat on your weapon, which is really the most important stat of all for any class.


I agree with the problem this thread complains of, but think the best solution is a weighted average, emphasizing the most important pieces of gear. Right now, the only weighting applied to our average iLvl is the fact that multi-slot equipment is counted once for each slot it takes up. In addition to that, they should be weighing weapons as greater than armour which is greater than jewelry. (If they wanted to get even more specific, they could even split it out farther along the lines of: main weapon > off-hand > body/legs > head/hands/feet > belt > jewelry, but really the most important part is that weapons > armour > jewelry if they want to keep it fairly simple.)
