Hello everyone. I have a Free Trial account, but I plan to sub when the trial ends, but I was wondering. If a friend of mine gave me their spare FFXIV disc for the PS3, would I be able to log into my account and play on my PS3, or do I need to go buy a copy with a code?

I'm not 100% sure but you'll need to buy yourself your own copy. Unless your friends game has never been opened/registered. If it has it is linked to your friends PSN/SE account so no, you would not be able to.
There are 2 ways to install the game: one is via the disc and the other is via the code included in the case that the disc comes in (as well as the digital stand-alone version).
But, if you want to play the actual game, the code, which also functions as a download code, must be registered to the PSN account that is going to be used to access FFXIV (which should also be linked to your SE account).
In the end, you need to purchase the game again, either in a physical format (disc) or digitally on PS Store. However, you can use any disc to install the base game faster and then start-up the client and download the patches when you login.
each copy of ff14 wether it be ps3/ps4/pc etc has a code u must use to register ur account so no u have to buy the game
