Multiple dotting targets with Thunder?

For instance, I was thinking about multi-dotting Imdugud's children but I ultimately passed on doing so, because I'm under the impression that multi-dotting is a dramatic DPS drop. Same goes with Golems in T9

I'm not sure how the thundercloud procs stack on multiple targets, but if having multiple up at once increases proc rate, then it's a huge dps boost. I'll do some small sample testing tonight on our FC dummies, it should be pretty clear with 3 of them.

I have no numbers to back it up, but I always toss thunder on about half the mobs that will survive more than 30 seconds and the proc rate has always felt higher. Specifically Ifrit nails, I'll thunder him and 1-2 nails depending on where I am in my rotation, Levi and 1-2 bubbles, Ramuh and 1-2 of his adds, etc.

You should Thunder II at least 2 mobs whenever you can as thundercloud can proc based on both dots ticking. Which generally is a pretty noticeable dps gain when those procs start flooding in.

Just as long as you don't lose any of your astral uptime, dot away. Multiple proc sources help a lot, but it's not really a yes/no answer or an X number of dots on X mobs answer. Just make sure not to overlap thunder on a single target if there are multiple targets up. When you get a proc, spread the love to another target, and so on. Just fit as many thunders in as you can without messing up your fire rotation. More of a priority system than any specific rotation.
To answer your specific question, I usually multi-dot on the children, but unless I get a flood of procs somewhere it'll only end up on 2 or 3 at a time. For the second set I'm on LB, so I generally go into UI, put up 1 thunder while the tanks get into position, LB, and since I start my rotation from full mp at that point I can drop another quick thunder on someone else.

So This is what I do on the second Add Phase, where DPS really matters.

As he casts ElectroCharge to summon the Adds, I make sure to get in a Bliz3 to stack UI.

I then LB. It needs to be noted that you will NOT retain stacks of either Ice or Fire through the LB. You will be left with no stacks, so making sure you are at full MP when you LB is important.

After LB you should Fire 3 the Son of the MT ( Or Whom evers adds you kill first. ) .

Then you can generally get off 2 fire II's, and then double flare with the help of Convert. Both adds are generally dead. Transpose that and Cast Thunder on the OT's Son, then go into your rotation on the Daughter. Then as the Son is near death you should switch to the new Adds. Apply thunder to the son and go to town on the Daughter. Use Thunder Procs on the Daughter Obviously.

If you do it correctly, Raging strikes will be up for the last 2 Adds. ( Raging strikes at start, then as soon as its up again, which is generally right after the first Adds die and heat lightning is going out for the first time, then its up for the final 2 Adds at full hp. )

Incorporate Potions of your choosing ( Ethers for more Flares or X-Pots for dmg. )

Never underestimate Fire 2 with the weak adds. It does a good amount of dmg and you kill both of them simultaneously.

You can LB As they spawn, cutting the Down time in half, and you then have more time to Deal Damage. You actually Lose DPS if you wait and cast thunder because in the time you casted thunder it could have been after the LB, and it could be AOE dmg on the MT Adds, which wipes them out very quickly.

Casting Thunder on the first 2 adds is not something I do because you just need quick spike damage to clear up the MT so he can grab the 2 new adds.

Hard and fast answer:

If you have to stay in UI3 for 2 GCDs and there are 2 targets who will live long enough for Thunder do deal more damage than a Bliz 1, put a thunder on both.
If you have to stay in UI3 for 2 GCDs and there are 2 targets, one of which will live long enough for thunder to deal more damage than a bliz 1 (a boss) and a short lived target, cast a thunder and a bliz on the short lived target
If you have to stay in UI3 for 1 GCD and there is 1 target that will live long, thunder it
If you have to stay in UI3 for 1 GCD and there is 1 target that is short lived, bliz 1 it.

In otherwords don't cast thunder at the cost of spending extra gcds in UI3 and only if they will live long enough.
