Devs. Please consider adding materia slots to every piece of gear, specifically Coil.

Let me start this off by saying that I actually think crafted gear is an amazing thing. It's an alternative way to get geared up that doesn't involve Soldiery/Poetics, so it's even easier for the common player to make sure they don't fall too far behind.



Now that that's out of the way, I think the devs should seriously consider adding Materia slots to every piece of gear in the game. Specifically, coil gear. I feel this way for a few reasons. Firstly, not only would it make materia more prevalent, it would help increase the weight of individual stats because you have a lot more power to allocate points into what you want to spec in.

For example, the difference between a SS BLM vs a DET BLM is noticeable, but not by much. If I equipped the Evenstar Coat over my High Allagan Coat, the loss of SS wouldn't be terribly noticeable. Adding materia slots to the equation would not only make the stat weights more prevelant, it would add a whole new layer to itemization. A layer that would really make you think about how you want to go about customizing your character.

My second point is that it's extremely silly and frustrating that crafted gear trumps Final Coil gear due to the fact that adding materia to it makes it completely outclass coil gear. It's hard to be excited about the Dreadwyrm Ring of Casting I have when I know that the i90 crafted ring would be a noticeable improvement because I could add materia to it. It removes all of the thril and quite frankly, the point of acquiring the new coil gear. Oh, I just got the Dreadwyrm Coat of Casting? Awesome...except it's not, because of the fact that my pentamelded i110 coat puts me over 6000 hp. Raiding is fun because of the challenges it brings to you and your group of friends, but more importantly, the awesome loot! The satisfaction of getting a piece of gear that you've been grinding incomparable. It's just hard to be excited about getting the drops because I know that I could just ask one of my friends to make me something that completely outclasses it.

Once again, I'm not saying that something needs to be done about Crafted Gear. It's fine the way it is. I'm just saying that adding materia to more pieces of gear in this game would not only add more overall relevance to materia, it would make the game a lot more interesting.

If they would do it they would also reduce the basic stats on the gear.

It would be nice if on dungeon gears would be a single one special materia slot. On this gear you can then meld a special materia, but only one.

Special Materias can have special stats, like Enmity+, Enmity- or increased TP Recovery as an example

I could see them having a NPC that will strip one of the secondary stats off gear, and putting materia sockets on it, but just adding materia without some kind of counterweight would throw things out of balance.

Crafted gear is already 20 levels down, it would become worthless.

Materia prices would be even worse, tome/coil gear should have been convertible to materia all along.

no. materia is way to expensive even now. would promote gil buying. with the totally retarded rng on top of that just no. it would only boost gil sellers and make them find even more customers than now. farming gil is plain flat out boring.

its fine crafted gear has bit better stats overall. but the difference doesnt make or break a raidgroup. in exhange you currently lose ilevels. for now the i110 crafted armor is OP enough. for now its BIS because barely anyone has final coil or i130 tombstone gear. tough that will change during the next 8 weeks. so its fine.

this game already does enough to promote gil buying i dont think thats an issues at the time.
