Gridania, Hyrstmill -- Text -- Eadbert's Missing Apostrophe -- "case"

When the player is progressing through the "Last Respects" sidequest and speaks to Eadbert, the following text appears in part:

"
way, see. It's pungent stuff, made by
the lemurs near Treespeak, case ye're
wondering.
"

This is incorrect because an apostrophe is missing before the word "case" on the second line of quoted text. Throughout the rest of the game, "case" appears as "'case" when it is a shortening of the phrase "in case".

Please fix this issue by replacing "case" with "'case".

The corrected text would appear as follows:

"

the lemurs near Treespeak, 'case ye're
wondering.

Pretty ridiculous find, considering there are only three other instances of "'case" in the entire game.

Geez, I'm starting to wonder how many grammar corrections Merm will have to make before SE decides to just hire the guy.

I hate to be a grammar Nazi, in the face of the Grammar Uber-Nazi, especially after it's been addressed by the devs, but...

I'm gonna have to contend that in this instance " case " was appropriate, and that " 'case " would be incorrect, so if anything, the other instances of " 'case " should be changed to " case "

The phrase "in case" is itself an abbreviated clause which could be more fully expressed as "In the case that...", also, the ' mark is used when a portion of a word is omitted for reasons of style, space constraints, or an authors whim and fancy, such as 'cause, ne'er or ye'er (See what I did there?); so becase there is no truncation of a word in this instance the word "case" is able to stand on it's own as an abbreviated version of the clause "in the case that".

I don't think that's true. That's certainly a longer way of saying the same thing, but that doesn't automatically make the shorter version a truncation. In this particular example, the phrase "in case" is still able to stand as being fully grammatically correct all on it's own, and therefore cannot be considered a truncation.

Sorry, but you're wrong. There is a truncation here: the removal of the word "in."

This is because the word "case" cannot stand as being grammatically correct in and of itself in this particular circumstance, and so must be considered a truncation because it leaves off a necessary part of the phrase. This is different from the phrase "in the case that" because there, the words "the" and "that" can both be removed without the phrase becoming grammatically incorrect. But when you remove the word "in," the sentence structure falls apart, which is why it's considered a truncation, thus making the apostrophe necessary.
