Temple of Qarn debacle
I'm going to make my first post on here a confession. Let me start by saying this game is my first mmo so I've got a lot to learn and I'm clumsy as hell. So here goes. I decide to use duty roulette to get better at tanking (MRD). I'm at level 36 and instantly get instanced into Qarn so I'm thinking oh shit this may not go well. I die within the first 5 minutes to a group friggin bats. Now I know that I'm much worse at this than I originally thought. I get squished two more times before making it to the boss and have to run back to find my party. The whole time I'm wondering how this is going so badly? Jump to the boss fight and I'm down again half way through the thing. I'm so annoyed at this point I get turned around trying to get back to the party I use what I think is the short cut but happens to be the exit and I leave the dungeon! Needless to say I feel like the biggest idiot/asshole in the universe for leaving them without a tank... Sorry so long but had to get it off my chest.

I took a look at your character page on lodestone and your gear looks fine (make sure to replace that level 1 ring ASAP though...) but you should unlock your Warrior job, it was available at level 30 and will give you a stance change that gives you a substantial HP and Enmity boost as well as make healing spells cast on you more potent. You will need to complete all your Marauder class quests and get your Gladiator to level 15, then the Marauder guildmaster should give you the quest for it. It should help with your survivability, but not the misclicks =P

Are you sure it wasn't the bees that killed you? They have an attack called final sting if they're not killed quickly enough that will nearly kill tanks and instantly kill anybody else.
The first boss also has a mechanic that will one shot anybody that doesn't take the doom debuff off by standing on the glowing panel. It's the first dungeon of the game that starts throwing death out left and right and it catches a lot of people off guard.

Mistakes happen. This is my first MMO as well and it took awhile for me to get the hang of things.
I second Estellios' recommendation to unlock Warrior. The tank stance ability (Defiance) will help a lot with your survivability.

In this donjon, the things that kill you most, is not the dmg taken by monsters, but some mechanics kills or the bees.
On first boss : The boss do an AOE that put a debuff on you, and you have to work on the shiny plateform to remove it, you have like 20sec to do it, if you dont, you die at the end of the debuff.
The bees : When they're about to die, they begin to cast something, that deal something like 80% life whetever the defense or the HP pull you have, and if, at same time you're taking dmg from some other monsters, or/and the boss, you can die if the healer doesn't react fast enough.
Be sure to use your defensive CD for this attacks, it's the only thing dangerous (in dmg for the tank) there.
Also, make sure that the DPS kill the bees first when they spawn, if needed, you can put numbers on them with the marks.
I remind when I went thre first time yolo without reading any guide (becoz in my hea, it's low lvl, should be really easy right ?), I think I let my tank die once on bees, and I died also on first bos with the plateforms.
The rest of the dj is not that hard.
Since there, I know that bees are the most dangerous monsters in most MMO for some reasons, or even game, maybe japanese have some problem wih bees in thier country, but those monsters always bring more problem then other monsters.

I accidentally exited one of my first dungeons by running into the exit, too. I was a healer at the time, and I'd cast Protect a couple times (didn't even know it was party-wide back then because I always cast on each person as they exited cutscene), then started auto-running around the little start ring in a circle while I waited for the others to finish their cutscene. Last person loads, circle disappears, I auto-run right into the exit. XD
Deeeeefinitely go get Warrior. It (specifically, Defiance) makes a very big difference in your squishiness and ability to hold aggro. And don't sweat it too much. We're all newbies until we're not.

Thanks for the tips and for the stories Artiste/Bix! I will get to work on the warrior job asap.

Yes the bees will kill you if you're not topped off. Upgrading to WAR will definitely help. Make sure your gear isn't broken too.

You can stun "final sting" with "Brutal Swing". Hit it the second that the bee telegraphs FS. The DPS should kill the first bee before it gets "final sting", but if they don't, you can get that one too. It's important that you and the DPS are attacking the same target as "final sting" is started at around 25% of the bee's health. If you're separately burning them down, one or the other might get FS off before you can stun it. Don't forget about Doom from the boss.
Also, strong advice on the Warrior job. Get your Paladin up to 15 at the least.

Good job on unlocking your job. I have one small thing to add to the good advice you've received. I noticed most of your jewelry has strength as its main stat. This is dps jewelry and will make it make you more squishy.
You can equip any class's jewelry on your tank so you need to look for jewelry that lists vitality as its primary stat and equip that.
