Eh. Some people think they're funny and clever. Best just to ignore them as best you can. As long as your party gets the general idea of where to stand, it should be fine.
Alliance and Party chat has gone into rage mode blaming and pointing fingers trying to figure out who keeps turning it off causing either someone to rage quit, log off, afk, vote abandon, vote to kick someone Innocent or not etc etc.
I like seeing markers, in the chaos of battle, if i suddenly have to sprint towards a platform to raise a shield or help my group with positioning a monster for beams, or even adds or anything, i'd like to know where i'm going without looking what place has the most cyan colored nametags around it and guessing it might be there.
I'm particularly fond of marking tanks, especially when i'm tanking as well, that way we can see what monsters are being picked up by a tank that's nearby and what monsters are currently roaming around. It's a massive performance boost and all it takes is having 3 little markers on 3 people. Personally i stopped caring entirely about douchbaggery in ST.
I mark the three tanks, if they remove them, i explain to them once how it would be helpful, if they remove them again, screw it. Especially if they complain afterwards that tanks arent picking up monsters. Well, we could have seen which were being dealt with and which are not, but you guys decided not to allow that.
Heck, with 15 slots the DPS queue is instant, and as a tank i'm waiting 20 minutes. I have no qualms doing it as a mindless DPS instead.
Just don't tell ask them to stop. They think it's funny/amusing and will probably get over it when the next fight starts. It's when someone asks the troll to knock it off they'll continue to spam it during the fight.
I personally like it in larger groups (full party to alliance) when waymarks are marked so you can quickly parse locations and directions with barely a glance and I like it when the tank and healers are marked so it is easier to keep track of where everyone is.
As far as people turning them on and off, sometimes people do that because they think that where they want the waymarks is the only correct spot even when the difference is negligible, otherwise trolls just be trolling.
They are not even gonna stop
