Can't access my character?

Earlier today I got a new computer and just re-installed steam & ffxiv on it, but whenever I run ffxiv it seems to think I am new and won't let me select my character! It only tells me to make a new one. I searched around the internet but I couldn't find anyone having a similar problem. What do I do? How can I access my character again? Did I just miss something really obvious? I just want to get right back to playing ffxiv that's the reason I got a new computer in the first place ;_;

Are you on the right datacenter/server?

Can you see your character, and when you go to enter it says to make a new one?

wow don't I feel stupid, all I had to do was watch that darn intro all the way until the end. they really should let you skip that.
