I have a friend who's playing the trial version right now, and he's thinking about getting the PS4 version rather than the PC. Is that possible? I know the trial itself is for PC only, but can you buy the PS4 version and log into your account to keep your character? Or would he have to buy the PC version?

As far as i know he shouldn't have any problem. The trial is basically applied to an account with Square Enix that can be accessed in eithet PS3/PS4/PC as long as you have the username and password.
Yes - he can get PS4 version afterwards and login to the same SE Service account and continue using the same characters. Even better - if he have (access to) PS3 he can get much cheaper boxed PS3 version (under £4 in UK now) and upgrade for free to PS4 and if he'll get two copies of the PS3 version and use the second one after upgrade he'll get twice 30 free days - all for less then 1 month worth of sub - that's currently the best option how to get into game ;)
