Almost level 50...

Well so far I'm a level 42 Paladin and I'm going to be 50 soon so I was wondering... How's tanking like at 50? Is it harder, easier? And what are tanking the primals like? Should I get a lot of my myth gear before trying to get my relic or should I just try to get my relic as soon as I can.

It gets 'harder' relating to mechanics of different fights (really it depends on the fight) but if you know how to get hate and use your skills correctly nothings really different. you'll get circle of scorn for some good AoE aggro + decent damage and hallowed ground for those 'oh shit about to die' moments.

Overall what you end up doing on either tank isn't very difficult on it's own and depends on the mechanics. Out of Warrior and pally, warrior is the more complicated in regards to mitigating damage. (I personally have more fun with pally but maybe I'm just weird.)

Once you hit 50 and complete main story, only a handful of dungeons(3?) Well be available while the others have a minimum I level requirement. When I hit 50 on my war I wasnt to sure how to handle debuff stacks abd tank swapping as it does not come into play until endgame. In ffxi you would have secondary tanks their mitigating their enmity so that if the main tank fell you where there to pick up where they left off at. So this was a new mechanic for me to take in. In regards to relic, starting it will help get your overall ilevel up as well until you obtain something better

when you are just starting out myth is going to come slow at the beginning im afraid so keep at it. get an ilvl 55 weapon from your GC first if you can. it can take you places. do some ifrit hard or even garuda hard to get an idea other than the dungeons you been doing and start with your relic as well as following the other main story that unlocks after Garlean attack.

Now that you can get Allied Seals through hunts, you can save enough to purchase a base of iLVL 90 gear to wear the day you make LVL 50. I purchased everything for my WAR for that reason. That said, in the days long ago (4 weeks or so? LOL) before the hunts, I had already leveled my WHM and BRD to 50 and like those who posted here, I earned my relic and I moved ahead to Atma and started Animus. With the hunts, instead of having to grind extreme fights and such for a drop, I got my iLVL to 92 by purchasing gear with Allied Seals and Tomes of Soldiery. The increase in level only does this for anyone though: gives you a little more <insert strength, vitality, determination, etc> but it doesn't make you a better player. I can't tell you how many people still suck, they just suck with better gear on. They don't know how to fight, hold aggro, heal, DPS, etc. If you're a good tank, you'll be able to rely on your gear to help you more. If you're a bad tank, you won't be better until you take the time to learn your abilities and the mechanics of how to use them, depending on the situation. I'm sure you'll do great. :D

And as a side note, anyone who's been in a DF with me as a GLA, I apologize up front. I AM AWFUL AT IT!! She's only LVL 27, and I don't see her getting higher any time soon. I seem to gravitate to WAR, but for some reason, I just stink on ice when it comes to GLA.

As for what changes from 42 to 50+... think of it as a continuous increase: Complexity of actions and tactics will go up. Hopefully you've already been leveling through the 4-man dungeons, so it'll be a smooth increase. Once you hit 50 it will keep going up as you go up the ilvl scale - largely on gear requirements though, complexity of tactics levels out at some point and just details change.

As for relic vs. myth armor... I'd recommend relic, though the myth gear is plenty important too. Please keep in mind that there is also i55, i70, and i80 gear in the higher 4-man dungeons that you can pick up as filler until you finish the myth gear. Also, coil turns 1, 2, and maybe 4 can be done easily enough and drop equivalent gear to myth.

Weapon is super important though and relic is easiest way to get a decent one. You'll invariably start at 50 grouping with people geared better than you. So weapon is the biggest thing that helps a tank gain agro -- you'll need it. In the relic fights you may feel like the worst geared and not contributing a lot. But there will be 2 tanks and the relic fights only really require 1 tank.

This was useful for me, so how are people getting so many Allied seals. I have like 20 or so? Do you just farm the elite Hunt mobs?

Join a Hunt linkshell, join a party to maximize your chances of getting full credit (either through PF, shouting if you see a target is up, or asking in the LS you joined) and kill everything that pops. Usually people will do this when As are up while doing Bs inbetween their spawns to maximize seals and then take a break until As are back up again. It's a giant zerg fest and incredibly broken, but atm there's no point not taking advantage of that. glhf

I found tanking on my PAL got tons easier from 42-50. As mentioned, Circle of Scorn is a great way to add aggro to the group at the beginning of a fight when paired with flash, and spirits within is a nice heavy attack. I also recommend going for the relic weapon ASAP. Jumping from an iL 45-50 weapon to an 80 or even 90 makes a huge difference in hate generation, even when level synced to lower dungeons. You are almost at the level to unlock your beast tribe missions where you can gain XP and up to 30 Mythology a day. This helps get a head start on the 900 you will need to upgrade your Relic weapon from 80 to 90. The relic quest itself isn't too bad, and as RhazeCain said, the duties you have to run will Queue with two tanks, and you only need one. Chances are you will get another tank who will already be geared and can MT, you just try not to die.
