I am on PS4, and somehow the NPC dialogue box was moved lower. I might have done this inadvertently in the beginning. I want to raise it, but I can't find it on the HUD choices. When I get a quest or text bubble from my retainers, I have to drag it upwards. Please help. Thanks.
On PS3, you're able to move the dialog box where you want and it will stay there (except during cutscenes, when it always reverts to its default location). On PS4 this is pretty screwed up, but with a bit of trial and error I was able to get it to somewhere close to what I wanted. It doesn't seem to correctly remember the location you gave it, so on the next dialog it will place it further down or towards the edge. If in your case, it's going too far down, then try dragging it to a position higher up than you tried setting it last time, even if that's also higher than where you want it. It may take a few tries to find the magic spot to place it which it will interpret as going where you actually want it the next time. (And if you want pixel perfect control over where it goes, you're probably out of luck.)
It's easiest if you find a random NPC with a single window of dialog that's not related to any quest, so you can bring the dialog up and dismiss it over and over while you experiment with positioning it.
(In my case, I wanted to move it to the bottom left corner, and it kept coming back up as half off the screen. I eventually found a spot a few inches to the right and about an inch up from the bottom, that made it come back up in that bottom left location I was trying to place it in the first place.)
that's my point. I pulled it up for conversation A with a mouse and it put itself back for conversations B through infinity. It only stays for the conversation that I moved it in. I was hoping there was a HUD setting that would allow me to move it permanently that I might have missed.
Right. It's the location the software chooses to move it to that will continue to be used for all subsequent conversations, and on PS4 that will not be where you put it, but it is affected by where you put it. I'm hoping SE will eventually fix the placement problem, but in the meantime, you can (at least sort of) work around it.
As the software stands now, don't pull it up to the place where you want it. Pull it up to somewhere significantly farther up than that (and farther up than where you tried before). Then when the software moves it down (on the next conversation), that will hopefully end up where you actually wanted it. (But keep track of roughly where you tried placing it before, so if it still goes down too far, you know to try placing it somewhere higher on your next attempt to drag it up. It takes a bit of trial and error to get it to work.) You have to find a setting so that the location it chooses to move it to is what you want (or close enough, as it seems to have only certain possible places it will pick between).
