An objection about the new achievement "The Crying Game"
"The Crying Game
Defeat Nael deus Darnus within the fourth turn of the Second Coil of Bahamut (Savage).
Title: Domitor"
(from the 2.3 patch notes)
The decision to localise the achievement title like this is transmisogynistic. The name comes from a film entitled The Crying Game in which the lead female character is revealed to be transgender. The scene involves the man she is involved with being disgusted by the discovery that she is transgender and running out of the room to throw up. I'm sure I don't need to spell out why this is offensive in itself.
It's appalling that Square Enix would choose something like this to represent an achievement for defeating Nael in battle. It's inappropriate to make a joke about transgender women when it relates to an achievement for an act of violence.
I notice that the Japanese version makes no reference to, or joke at the expense of, Nael's gender or appearance. So why was this necessary? If the localisation team REALLY wanted to make some kind of reference, why choose a film that contains a scene that is frankly incredibly disrespectful and offensive to trans women?
