How is it possible?
I see it quite often, I mean I know the basics, I am not some half witted player, but honestly...how do you have more than one main?
There can be only ONE main!! You can't have two mains, you have ONE main and then alternate classes.
Ahhh...it boggles my mind!!!

For most people a main class would mean that they are most comfortable with the rotation and dynamics of that particular class which usually is just one class. But its not impossible to actively be good at multiple classes, especially if they are of the same specific class genres. Just like some people are right handed, some are left, and some are good at using both hands equally.
For me i have only 1 main (PLD) as im MOST comfortable with that class in terms of rotations, movements, skills. Id be to much for me to actively be equally good at another class, so they are alternates.

2 classes with the same ilvl.

2 characters with appropriately leveled gear sets ;)

That's using a term incorrectly then if you are referring to gear and a class. I'm with the understanding that there was a time people would play one role and master it and as a result, call that their main.
I'm playing a warrior, he is my main. All content he is first priority thus making him a main class.

It's possible because it takes two days to get a class/job to 50 and another two days to get it to i90+

I have one character that is mostly blm main. I have a second character that has a brd as main and another character with the "main" as DRG. Not really hard to have multiple "main" characters ;) and yes I've got to end game 3 times :)

I'm used to FFXI job system, I think the FFXIV job system can be a little mind boggling *pats back* I feel your pain!

Eh, sometimes people switch back and forth depending on content. Alts get better geared than mains for one reason or another and people have '2 mains' or they try to keep 2 classes equally geared and played for one reason or another. I had a friend who hit 50 on PLD and BRD (as his first 2 jobs to 50) within a day or so of each other because he kept switching back and forth while going through the main scenario.

2 Characters you play the same amount. regradless of gear or level. you play both equally.
It's like saying you have a favorite child, Which you can't really.
On this note, FFXIV being able to play all jobs on one character really limits the chances of this.
