Unfortunately, it's a map, and this is how maps work.
There's plenty of visual cues available to let you know that the map isn't done, and a fairly large icon that appears when you get Alexandrite. You just have to pay more attention.
Also, do the maps with a friend. While all the maps are soloable, Alexandrite is just to important. Be safe and bring your battle buddy!
I did the same thing last night, ported out without opening the chest. Luckily I was in a party with some friends and they stayed behind so I could pop back and get it.
But there should be some kind of trigger, like a pop-up to confirm the Teleport because treasure is unclaimed or something.
The system knew well enough that the chest was still there since I got auto-booted from the party when I ported out.
Yes, this is how maps work. You've obviously done enough of them to know this, so failure to actually open the untrapped chest is on you, not SE.
It would be nice if the system asked for a confirmation before abandoning. I'm sorry you lost your alexandrite.
