Job vs class confusion
OK so I have really just started playing and I'm really enjoying it but the whole job/class thing is confusing me. I know switching classes is a simple matter of changing equipment and that you level in other classes to obtain a job. So this is where my confusion is if you already have a job can you still level up your classes and get another job?

Basically, yes. Once you've unlocked the Armoury System you have to visit the Guild for each class you want to level, and they'll give you a level 1 weapon or tool for that class, which you then simply equip to change to. EXP is unique to each class too. Jobs a little more complex, in that when you equip a Job's soul crystal, you're still fundamentally the base class, it just changes the name to the Job's name and you also now have access to better unique abilities which will help you considerably in battle, particularly in parties. For instance, CNJ's Job upgrade is WHM, and hence CNJ loses some of it's attack magic potency in favour of concentrating on healing.
And you're free to unlock as many or as few classes and Jobs as you wish, although it's recommended to unlock and level as many as you can, as you'll have access to more abilities to 'cross-class' for starters.

When you level up your job, your class levels up at the same time. You can learn all the classes and all the jobs. The only class that that can learn two jobs at the moment is arcanist. You will need different secondary classes for those. You can learn both jobs at the same level and when you level up one job, the other one will level up too. However, jobs for the same class share class attributes.
Eek, a bit too slow...

Aaaahhh now it makes sense thanks for the info

Jobs aren't like new classes. They're augmentations to existing classes. So, for example, a white mage is still a conjurer for most intents and purposes.
