Role playing server...

I'm looking to get into rping a character to mix things up a bit. This would be my first attempt at it and was wondering which server is the "rp" server? I've been told Gilgamesh but wanted to check.

Balmung is the primary hub for Roleplaying, Gilgamesh was set up as a secondary, but I'm not sure if that community even exists anymore.

Where do people RP in Balmung?

Balmung is the unofficial role-playing server. Just be warned, there are a few "special" role-players on there, but that comes with the territory of every MMO.

Balmung, but it's a pain to get in because it's normally full.

Pretty much everywhere. I walk through the City States and Mor Dhona and see people RPing through /say all the time.

It's sort of taking it more seriously, like actively creating a back story and enacting it with other people.

Most RPing I see here is either in the Grid or Uldah tavern. (I actually had to turn my custom emotes off because it's so frequent. So, there's a lively community who would probably welcome you. ^^)

I'm on Balmung and there is a -lot- of RPers in Ul'dah.

I will say though, there seems to be an influx? if you will of people who have alts or transferred or started out who seem to either only want ERP or are 'special' 4ch XIVG people.

The lodestone periodically updates for when characters can be created / transferred?

I've never checked other times but Balmung is usually open 4am and 8am PDT.
