Tank Swaps how to do it right?

Swapping at times causes me a lot of trouble.

I have my defiance up I combo the hate level until my hatebar is as white as the main tank and hit provoke and usually follow it with few overwhelms or a combo if I need to focus on a single target.

Many times the swap ends up in a complete clusterf*** and I would like to know just what am I doing wrong here.

Coil 1 and garuda extreme are the hardest for me because the hate needs to be focused on a single target at times.

Please help I want to be better!

As a tank in general. gaining hate is usually (shield oath)voke+offgcd+hatecombo
More advance you should do you 1st attack that has no threat aka Heavy/fast then hold on to the next 2

Loosing hate is usually stop using hate combo a bit early, so when a voke happens you're not on a hate combo. (and if you want to be safe lose defiance turn around etc).

Warrriors in general can get it easier. Voke+stun almost always spikes hate enough to pick it up. only if the other tank is being stupid do you not get it.

To help again do a heavy (hold that) voke+stun -> finish BB combo.

Loosing hate is a lot harder then gaining hate. You are thinking of it in reverse for wars. Often it's the one loosing it that needs to do better (yourself included)

Start going into storms path combo early. If you know you are on 2 stacks and you swap at 3, stop using using BB combos early. When you swap there should be no competition. At worse, you turn around, at best nothing will happen, cause the threat change happens instantly.


For garuda/t1 that has no swap. stick with Heavy (hold on to it) when time comes (like a sister popping) voke+finish off your BB.

In fact in garuda ex, you shouldn't even need to voke much, saving it for the spiny.

Usually the OT just grabs the split.

A safe way to get hate is to build up combo by using the 1st and maybe 2nd attack of your hate combo an save the 2nd/3rd attack of the combo for a big spike after provoke.
Provoke + hate combo attack should give you enough hate to position the Split, if you are the one moving.
Just use Tomahawk a few times while moving.
For Garuda you only use provoke for Spiny Plume as MT. OT can use it to get the sister from MT before moving to middle and plumes spawn.

Tank swapping also requires the other tank to understand the fight, so he doesn't keep spamming hate combo when it's time for a swap.
Most of it is prediction (know when a swap will be required and prepare for it), building hate combo and maybe saving an instant for using it after provoke.


I've also had tanks who tried to get hate without provoke. They just kept spamming hate combo.
Provoke is 100% required for proper swaps.

EDIT: You don't have to drop Defiance or Shield Oath, and you shouldn't do that as long as you are the one taking dmg.
You also don't have to use a single hate combo when not tanking. Provoke will put you at the same hate level as the other tank, so you can use your other attacks to support the tanking tank.
Riot Blade+Stoneskin for PLD and both Storm's Combos for WAR.
In later fights which require swaps, dropping your defensive stance could even lead to problems. Ifrit EX for example might require a swap after 30 seconds, but it could also be required after 10 seconds.
Titan EX during heart phase is a time where you should switch to offensive stance for example (when OT).

Heavy Swing > Provoke > Skull Sunder > Butcher's Block. If you're taking it from a PLD they need to chill for a second and not, say, do Halone right after you Provoked.

Bringing your enmity up to equal the current MT is not necessary. Provoke sets you to top of the hate list, +1. You can be at the very bottom and still tank swap because of how Provoke works. Unless you are doing a max damage rotation you shouldn't be using much of any Butcher combo on a single target tank swapping fight when you're the "current" offtank.

You should not be using Overpower on single target, ever.

If WAR: Provoke >Skull Sunder>begin comboing
If PLD: Provoke >Rage of Halone>begin comboing

It's really that simple.

Also the coil 1 split is confusing because for some reason I can't tell which one I should get. I'm usually ot in c1.

Also I'm war but I have cross class skills up to provoke.

If second tank is an ass even provoke won't work if he still does enmity combo ;p
It's so painfull when you waste provoke just to second tank take aggro again...

Is "stun" you're talking about a skill or a side effect of one? I can't seem to find it.
Also I'm using voke in garuda ex after I've dealt with chirada and am picking up suprana. Sometimes she loses interest in me halfway on our way to SE spot and this usually results in a wipe :(

It's so frustrating trying to progress as I know the fights but my skill use is obviously really bad and I can't see why.

That's easy.
1. Just keep attacking (debuffing) the boss until you approach the split.
2. Acitvate Defiance and start building hate combo up to Skull Sunder or Butcher's Block until Caduceus splits.
3. Press whatever button you use to switch through hostile targets. This will target the split.
4. Provoke, combo attack, start running, Tomahawk till you are in position, keep using hate combo or Storm's combo as needed.

That's Brutal Swing.
Also, never use Provoke as single skill. It doesn't generate enmity itself, it just increases your enmity to the highest level of the party.
Hit the sister with Tomahawk till you get it to your position (2-3 should be enough usually) or run close to use a hate combo attack to really grab it.

How a tank swap becomes a clusterf#ck: Tank 1 has tons of threat, tank 2 does not. Tank 2 provokes and follows with a threat move but in the mini gcd between the two, tank 1 smacks target again and stays above the other tank.

If you really want to swap cleanly, stop generation before the swap and sheathe your weapon during the actual swap. After the other tank gets hate, give them a gcd or so to solidify their lead over you.
