Help with Chocobo Companion

Hi, I'm a lvl 50 white mage and I was trying to get my cross class skills and something that I noticed is that you can summon a Chocobo to fight with you. Now to be honest at the beginning I was just to lazy because I was doing great job alone with the white mage but with the Arcanist I die all the time. I know that you have to finish a quest to unlock the companion and I can really use some help to lvl up, but I heard that the chocobo tanks are bad, should I choose a dps type or maybe healer or you can changed at any time, I was looking for some guides but only found the unlock quest and that you have to purchase some Gyshal Greens. Thanks in advance.

I think the tank chocobo isn't too bad at low levels (the AI was improved recently so it uses its hate moves immediately instead of waiting forever to start), it's just incredibly underpowered at level cap. I have my points spread out between the different skill trees and it makes for a well-rounded chocobo that performs much better than a focused one, you just miss out on the exclusive barding until they allow us to reset points. Arcanist might be rough but I think your level 15 quest gives you Topaz carbuncle which is a very good tank while solo.

For Ecosmith: As you go through the storyline you will eventually have to choose a grand company at level 20 I believe. Since you probably will ask, no it doesn't matter what company you choose, the gear has very little difference between them so pick the one you like best. Once you join a grand company you can get a quest from an officer there that will tell you to purchase a Chocobo issuance with company seals that you get from quests, duty roulette, FATEs, and company leves. After you get the issuance you just take it to the stables NPC for your chocobo.

Well after you hit lvl 20 you can join a free company and there is going to be avaibale a quest called "My Little Chocobo", when you finished you can get the mount.

Yeah the Topaz carbuncle is great it saved my ass several times that's why I thought that maybe a dps class would be better because 2 tanks maybe won't be helpful at all.

Is your character level 20 or have you completed the level 20 quest?

Actually, I'm lvl 22 now. I'm in Black Bush Camp. I've been picking flowers and running goblins out of town.

Keep following the main story quests (the ones with the fiery outline) and you will get there.

After you kill Ifrit, you should be able to apply to a grand company at their hq in one of the cities. They will give you a quest to earn 2000 seals and then get a chocobo mount.
Once you are level 30 and have a chocobo, you can go to Camp Tranquil in South Shroud (Gridania) and get a quest there to use them as a battle companion.
