PS4 - asking for disk

I have had contradictory information on this - do I really need to have my PS4 game disk in when playing FFIV?

A message asks me to insert the disk when I try to start the game, but others with a hardcopy say they don't need theirs. It's just a minor annoyance but I can see no reason why I would need it - having already used the code to play the game it's not needed as proof of ownership or anything. I can play my Windows copy without needing to use the disk.

Yes. I have the same issue.

I purchased FFXIVARR Collectors Edition physical copy for my PS4, redeemed the registration code in the PlayStation Store and installed the game from the disc. All went smoothly and in less than an hour later, I was on the character creation screen. After trying out the game for a bit and happy with the results, I logged off for the night and took out the disc from my PS4 and put it away.

The next day, I fired up my PS4, selected FFXIVARR from the content launcher area and got a message asking me to insert the disc. I was confused. I thought the game had already been installed on my HDD lastnight. So, I inserted the disc and then the game started up and ran smoothly from then on. I guess it's safe to say that you do need the disc if you have installed the game this way.

I tried to find a way around this, thinking if I've redeemed and registered the game, that means that I own the license and should be able to download a digital copy from the PS Store for free. I was wrong... I couldn't download the game from the PS Store. When I selected the game from the PS Store, it says "Not available for purchase" and it also says that the reason is because I already own the game.

Ok, so nevermind. Guess I'll have to play with the disc in. No biggy. But then I got thinking. What if I lost the disc? Since I already registered the code and it still doesn't let me download a digital copy of the game from PS Store, does that mean that I have to buy another copy of the game on disc with another registration code and redeem it again?

I've noticed that some people say that they bought the disc and that they didn't need the disc after initial installation. But that's because they had the beta version already installed on their HDD. After they bought the disc and redeemed the code, they only needed to update the game and they're all good to go. So the game is still running off their HDD.

I hope some one can clarify all this, please? I don't mind needing to play with the disc but if I loose the disc or if it breaks, will I need to buy a new copy and registration code?

^ Thanks - that pretty much captures my thoughts as well. I have been chatting in-game with PS4 folks who don't need the disk inserted; and as you note I can't download the game again as it says I already own it - the store should let us download some sort of activation so we don't need a physical disk (since it's already linked to our PSN id and can't be used again by anyone else). It's all kind of silly and I hope this is changed at some point in the future.

Same problem here. Solve by delete game and re-download from PSN store.

Now running without disc.

It's becasue you're trying to purchase it again (which you can't of course) - you need to only re-download it. Backup your game saves (not really needed though), uninstall the game, then got to the Library on the main PS4 screen / menu and re-download the game from there.
