How common are hearers?
Basically the subject. I think I read that they aren't super common, but I wonder if it's, "there aren't many, compared to how many conjurers there are" or "there are only a handful each generation".
Also, related to another thread, are there more hearers who can simply sense, "something is amiss" and fewer who can actively communicate with them?
Thanks for the input!

Hearing actually is stated as being quite a rare skill in Gridania, and not one usually considered a 'standard' ability of conjury - there are plenty of CNJs around but actually nowhere near as many hearers. And naturally, padjal hearers are even rarer. It seems to come down to sensitivity of one's surroundings, which is the key to communing with the elementals.
The CNJ quest line goes into that in detail (it should be noted certain hearers seem to possess a certain strength when communing with a particular elemental - the hearer Wulfie at Rosa Hawthorne's hut in the Honey Yard for instance specializes in communing with the element of water for instance - she possesses a particular sensitivity in that particular element), particularly concerning Sylphie's latent sensitivity to the elementals - she just had to let go of her emotional baggage and stubbornness before she could do that.

*nods* I'm going through the quests again, which is why this question came up.
Basically, long story short, this character is used to communicating with deities, and even having ...interesting pseudo-conversations with elemental sprites before she arrived in Eorzea. (Sort of like animism in this world. Some would say it's bunk, but others say it's just a matter of listening closely and the right way) It *seems* like she would have some ability to hear or "understand" the Elementals of the Twelveswood, but I'm ... just not sure. She used to be like a hyur, but is now a miqo'te because of silly character plot + magic c_c
Anyway, I guess that's the true question. Is it too unbelievable that someone like her would be able to listen to them, not in an official capacity, mind you, just for herself, or is this like ... way out of lore?

I don't think it's too far-fetched. Consider that the Echo's most potent function is allowing communication and that we've had entire discussions in the Lore forum about hearers versus the Echo and it is possible that the Echo, plus your character's unique situation with quasi-divinities, could grant a sort of "faux-hearer" type ability.
Iris would love to study her.

hehe. Thank you for the input!
If they were on Balmung it would be no problem. If they'd still like to do it, I can figure out how to share my tumblr or something. =)

Iris is on Tonberry, though I suppose she could visit? I keep an in-character blog here on Lodestone.
