You don't need food but it gives you a slight edge, and 3% xp bonus regardless of which food you eat. The big ones end game are buttons in a blanket, mulled tea, stuffed cabbage, and la nocean toast. Higher tier most people wont have the stats to benefit from yet. If you just want the xp bonus find the cheapest food you can find.
This actually isn't true anymore. They boosted the % that the 1- and 2-star foods give you so they are usable now and are personally what I am going to make my FC as farming clusters is incredibly easy and much less time consuming than farming shards.
That said the food the above poster mentioned are good choices regardless and should be cheaper than the starred foods so they will be more useful in dungeons where you don't want to bring out the pricey stuff.
As for how people obtain food, if the market is any indicator many people just buy it off the wards. In our FC I just take shard/crystal/cluster and material donations for food and leave a stock in the FC chest for people to use.
Thanks for the helpful responses!
I'm considering this from a number of angles including; helping my FC, being a better raider, and selling food for profit... I haven't looked too closely at material costs, and market rates (how quickly the sell and at what price) - so I thought I'd start here to gain some perspective on whether their generally used at all and which ones.
Mulled Tea actually really fell from grace lately and most former tea users now use Buttons, so I wouldn't bother with it personally.
Yarr, though it's mostly for Extreme Primals or Binding Coil. Even with the Echo, I still get some interesting people on my throat, so any advantage is appreciated. :p
Buttons in a Blanket/Black Truffle Risotto is nice universal food. I use Deviled Eggs/Apkallu Omelette on the Bard, Pineapple Juice on the White Mage and La Noscean Toast/Finger Sandwich when tanking. Pineapple Juice can probably be swiched out for the first four if you aren't having any MP issues, I suppose (Crit for Scholar, though I'd imagine the Accuracy on the food is a bit wasted).
As a WHM I prefer Buttons even with the minor Crit hit because neither Piety or Spell Speed are significantly useful (Piety is if you have MP probs but Spell Speed is actually a contradictory combination) and Det is by far the best secondary for WHM, to the point where I will take the max +10 crit (and probably lower since I don't stack it to begin with) for a significant amount of Det.
