suggestion to help boost outer map activity

Hi Guys,

I just thought of an idea that may boost activity in the world outside of dungeons:

Aetheryte Takeovers

Pretty much the way it would work is that at random times, an army of beastmen/garleans would target a random town with an aetheryte. If they do, It would be up to the players to defend that town from the takeover. If the players succeed, all is good. If they don't, that town is taken over by the beastmen/garleans, and its aetheryte cannot be used or teleported to until the town is reclaimed by an army of players.

Like it? Don't? Would you take part in something like this?

That sounds a lot like Hamlet Defence from version 1.0, which sadly was never popular with players (I'm not sure of the reasons as I never actually participated in it when I played 1.0, but reading past comments on this forum it was never very successful. So I doubt somewhat SE would bother bringing the concept back).

Hamlet defense was simply too long of an event.

"There are two phases to Hamlet Defense: a 50-hour non-combat phase where Disciples of the Hand and Land can enhance hamlet readiness for battle, and a 25-hour combat phase where Disciples of War and Magic can join the local militia and fight beastmen directly, while Disciples of the Hand and Land can aid in the effort in other ways."

sounds like the system that GW2 uses; you can't teleport to places sometimes because mobs had taken them over :/ it's actually more irritating than fun

It would need some tweaks from the Hamlet Defense model described above, but, I think that this could work nicely in FF14.

The maps aren't big enough to where a single Aetherlyte being taken would impact anyone too greatly.

If you can't warp to Wineport, you can still warp to Swiftperch. If you can't warp to Forgotten Springs, you can still warp to Little Ala Mhigo.


The only areas that would really be any type of pain would be Coerthas Central Highlands or Mor Dhonna. Then again, I don't see Mor Dhonna ever being taken over... seeing as how 80% of players that are logged in just stand in town trolling around. :)

This could be really cool if done right. It would make things interesting, and they could add gil rewards, minions, maybe even chocobo barding and such as rewards. It has a lot of potential.

People didn't hate doing Hamlet defense, they hated doing Hamlet Defense for the seals you needed to get for their relic, much like how people hate farming fates for Atma drops. All militia gear dropped in hamlet defense and the gear a unique item that wasn't crafted. I say bring back hamlet defense.
