Catoblepas fight mechanics

I'm hoping someone can shed some light on how this fight is supposed to go down as the combination of lag and uunfamiliarity last night made me unsure if we were actually doing it right. Specifically, I'm wondering what the shadowy orbs actually do. My guess was that the number of orbs up after his room-wide AOE attack finishes charging (where his eye changes colors) is the number of people that get petrified. Is this correct or am I completely off the mark here?

Completely off the mark.
Interacting with the orbs causes the Gloam status on you. It basically causes Blind, but also makes you immune to his AoE Petrify.
He always follows the AoE Petrify with a massive damage move that you CAN dodge, if you are able to move.

Also when his eye turns red right after this it becomes a new target, which will continually use an AoE Damage Taken Up debuff very, very fast until it dies.

when he does his main attack (forgot the name - one with really long cast time) that's when everyone clicks on the orb - u will become immune to it, other than that tank n spank and avoid the black hole looking aoe on the ground

This is key. I went in with a way over geared party, but I could see it being really difficult at lower item levels.

Did it Thursday and here is how it works.

Basically, it's a Tank N Spank except for when he's about to use his main ability. At this part, each party member clicks an Orb putting that buff that makes you immune to his room wide petrification. Then, you have to kill his if it spawns (I think only one time it didn't spawn after the third room wide petrification). If you don't do that, everyone will suffer a stacking room wide debuff increase vulnerability and some damage.

Got surprised by that stacking debuff on first try but second try, we saw there was an eye to kill and so we cleared it.

Ok, so I was onto something with the orbs and avoiding Demon Eye, just for the entirely wrong reason. And that also explains where that blind I was getting kept coming from. Thanks everyone.

We figured out the eye as a target immediately, but anyone running it in DF might want to make sure the DPS know about it. It's difficult to see that there's an HP Bar and name over the eye if you aren't in front of it.

Many people were having a lag, i noticed it makes impossible to click the orb. I passed it 3 times without issues by pre-casting Regen instead of clicking the orb (sch should have it easier). Also i could heal up to 6 stacks of that aoe damage, then eye died, so it's not that bad.
