I am looking to start equipping Materia but I need to become a Disciple of the Hand to do so. I have gotten Blacksmith and Armorer up to Level 10 so far, but what else do I have to do? Do I have to get a crafting class to a certain experience level, craft a certain number of items, do how many crafting guilds do I have to be involved with?
you have to get them to level 19 (a DoH) then you will be able to go to Black Brush Station in Ul'Dah. To the East there will be a camp with a goblin in it that gives you the quests needed to start attaching materia.
As Axlle mentioned, you need to get at least one of them up to level 19 and do the quest to unlock it. Once that's done, the ability to meld materia onto items is class specific, so you'll be able to meld materia onto the same types of items that you could make or repair. With Blacksmith and Armorer, for instance, you'd be able to attach materia onto metal armor or tools, but not onto cloth or leather armor, wood items, or jewelry.
