So I don't know if this is the right forum for this type of question but I was just wondering, if I were to want to switch from my desktop computer to a ps3 and buy a copy of the game for it will I be able to use the account that I had on the PC with all my gear, classes, and friendslists or will I have to recreate a new account and start all over again at lvl 1?
Yes, you can use the same account (with characters etc.) on any platform if you own respective copy. Simply use the same account when registering your game on PS3 (do not have more details on that since I am still waiting for my PS3 copy to arrive).
As long as you have purchased the software for each platform, you should be able to log in on both :) I have an FC member that switches between the two platforms frequently.
You MAY need to tie your PSN account to your FFXIV account to make it active, but that's about it.
You can use the same characters but there will be things to configure for each. Some character data (gear set, hot bars, user macros) are not saved server side.
