My suggestion/hope is that the new gear will have materia slots.
ATM materia in engame is worthless,imho it would be nice to see some materia slots on new top tier gear( this would allow for a small (tiny) amount of diversity on top gear).
It wouldn't be game braking and it may help the economy in game too.
What do you guys think?
Diversity is unlikely to exist due to the stat maximums on gear when melding materia. Besides that fact, there will always be a BIS (Best In Slot) build that most of everyone will follow.
If you want to make high end materia highly viable, there would have to be massive changes to the materia melding system. For an example, a blank ring with let's say 2 slots would have to be craftable. From there, main stats (str/dex/vit/etc) would have a total cap of let's say 25. Side stats (crit/det/acc/etc) would have a cap of 30. For the diversity AND economy effect, the stat restrictions would have to be as a whole somehow as opposed to the ring having individual caps such as STR cap of ~10-12, VIT cap of ~15-20, etc.
