[dev1022], [dev1032] How will Auto-Attack effect Guard Ability?

I am really interested to know how auto-attack will effect GLA's Guard ability, especially in light of the change to Ambidexterity.

I would have posted this in the existing thread (and I actually did) about the auto-attack changes, but its been overrun by disgruntled archers. Also I am kinda suprised more GLAs werent interested in what auto-attack means for shield usage in general.

For instance will we keep the current system intact, but use cooldowns instead of stamina, or will Guard become random like parry and evade, or will it be more like a stance or a mode?

Also by how much will Ambidexterity increase your block %, and will it make lower block rate shields more viable? Like a trade off: get a Decorated Iron Scutum and use Self-Preservation VS. using a Raptorskin Targe with Ambidexterity.

I'd really love to get a dev comment on this issue, but the floor is definately up for speculators too. And yes I realize that they probably would have mentioned a change in the way Guard works, but I would feel better with clarification.:confused:

How does the removal of stamina bar effect guard ability. AA never affected guard in the first place, as guard is not reliant on attacks.

Most likely it won't effect it till 1.19

It'll just be a redundant spam ability.

There are many ways to change guard.

1: take it out and make it permanent : ff11
2: Make it like stone-skin/ shadows (set amount of damage/block before it goes down)
3: Make it have penalties like walk speed, etc.

Meh, two sides of the same coin isnt it? I see what your saying, but why I asked it that way has more to do with if Guard will match the new direction of battle through AA. As in AA and the way Guard currently works just does not seem to go together. Or as you said would make it a redundant spam ability. I like your idea #3, I could get on board with that.

I think it'd be interesting if they made it so GLA's auto-attack is an "attack stance" where he attacks frequently while Guard is a "turtle mode" type of stance where shield is always up and the frequency of auto-attack is drastically reduced. That way, GLA will have to choose between defensive and offensive. They could also make it so certain abilities can only be used in one mode or the other, like say shield bash can only be used while in Guard mode where something like circle slash can only be used in Attack-mode.

We already have skills like that... namely defender (or clones) Again it becomes more trouble then it's worth at this point to complete revise the whole setup.

Much easier to choose 1-3. I personally like 2, but there are a lot of basic ways to treat the skill.

I hope they don't entirely go the way of XI personally. I don't mind them automating it to the extent that you don't have to continually raise your shield manually just to be able to block - but I don't want to see XI's system come back either where your block rate is random. I like it how it is now, reducing damage on every swing.

Thanks for the responses guys. And I definately agree NefGP, I don't think the current system really works wit an AA but I want it to be something different than FFXIs system.

Nice attitude. Chill out. Everyone has their own opinions and you might not agree with mine. That doesn't mean you get to be a jackass. And in answer to your question,of course I have used a shield. WTF do you think I created this thread?

Also, while I do have my own opinion, this thread is really about asking for clarification on what will be, not what I want. I don't think its unreasonable to think that certain things will change because of AA so again I ask for clarification.
