Toil of the mountaineer/pioneer

Tonight while mining, I kept hearing a chime. A guy told me that it was toil of the mountaineer. Now Ive had botany at 50 for a while now, and just got mining to 50. The way Ive always done botanist is that I would completely ignore the toil of the pioneer ability, and just hit the node i wanted to once to uncover it. Then from there, I would use blessed harvest II, which increase the number of items you get from the attempts. This gives me 5 attempts of 5 items each time, giving me 25 items total if I'm successful. However, if you use toil of the xx, that takes 300 gp, so then you don't have enough to do the BHII to get more items, meaning you will only get 18 items total if you are successful in all attempts.

I mean I guess if you're not sure where exactly the item is, then you would use it, but hell its all over the internet. i have a little cheat sheet of where everything is. just seems inefficient to me. Is there something I am missing here? I am doing it the best way right?

No, there's nothing you're missing. It's pretty much just a variant of the "one extra attempt" ability that also costs 300 gp.

It is kind of dumb that the items in unspoiled nodes are always in the same places, but you aren't exactly going to see lines of DoLs clamoring to get it randomized.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of the position of items?

My memory is like that blue fish in finding nemo. I don't know where any items are. I have a notebook for that, and also the times and locations. I accidentally used the wrong notebook, then transfered notes from one to the other, but forgot about that column, so now I know when and where nodes will spawn, but not the position of the items.

Toil (alternative is Ageless Words/Solid Reason, both methods cost 300) is basically a way to guarantee HQ mats. If you're going for pure yield without concern for HQ, then your method with Blessed Harvest/King's Yield is correct.

That's exactly why I use it. The unspoiled nodes give you 6 swings so if they are all successful you can make the last one a guaranteed HQ.

If I'm gathering Clusters, or an item I want in large quantities; I skip the toil of the mountaineer/pioneer and use field mastery/sharp vision (+5% gathering for 50GP), and blessed harvest II/kings yireld II (+2 items per attempt for 500GP). So I 'waste' 1 gathering attempt to get 2 more items on each of the other 5 attempts.

If I really want/need HQ materials; I use toil of the mountaineer/pioneer (300GP), field mastery/sharp vision (5% gathering for 50GP), and ageless words/solid reason (+1 gathering attempt for 300GP), which gives you TWO attempts after chain #4 which means Deep Vigor/Brunt Force on TWO attempts. {since you gain 5GP per successeful swing you can do this with 625GP}
