Steam Sale, does one have to immediately register?

Just curious. I'm thinking of buying the game for a friend or two. If i do grab it off the steam sale, do they have to immediately sign up, or can they wait until a sub for another game runs out before joining?

It's not required that they immediately sign up. I had trouble with my own sign up and had to wait a few days (at least) I don't think there's a limit on when the key can be used. But as soon as it IS used is when the time starts.
