So what combos have worked for you?
Right now my max level for a crafting class is 21, and I find it difficult making HQ items.
Any suggestions for early and late level combos?

Here's a few from my experience:
Low level key skills:
-Rumination, Carpenter 15
When used in combination with Inner Quiet this is a great way to recover CP. You'll get used to staring any craft off with Inner Quiet, and then using Rumination when you're out of CP.
-Hasty touch, Culinarian 15
Basically for when you have durability to spare and are out of CP, it's a 50% shot at gaining more quality.
-Tricks of the trade, Alchemist 15
Handy for those "Good" material phases that come at a time when you can't use them for quality gain. Instead of wasting them, you gain 20CP.
-Careful Synthesis, Weaver 15
For me this pretty much replaced basic synthesis once I got it. You trade a little effectiveness (90%) for 100% chance of success.
Low level less important skills:
-Manipulation, Goldsmith 15
Pretty much Master's Mend, but cheaper. Also takes a bit more skill and planning to use well. Handy if you're a few CP short of squeezing out another quality increase move.
Damn 1k character limit
High level, key skills:
-Ingenuity and Ingenuity II, Blacksmith 15 and 50 skill
Pretty much needed at some point to HQ the 1 and 2 star crafts
-Careful Synthesis II, lv50 weaver
120% effective, 100% chance of success, replaces Careful Synthesis and Basic Synthesis for all purposes.
-Byregot's Blessing, lv50 Carpenter
A godly skill, replaced Rumination for me once I got it. instead of giving CP, it uses 24CP to give quality (with 90% chance of success) proportional to the number of stacks of Inner Quiet. Great finisher for your crafting and needed to HQ high level.
-Innovation, lv50 Goldsmith
Increases quality gain by 50% for 3 moves. Key skill for HQing.
for the rest it's getting into a certain rhytm when crafting. Experiment around.
