New players questions

Hello all,

I have enjoyed the game so far, played beta up to 10 on a monk and now I rolled an 11 warrior. Been busy with GW2 but that game has no content or decent story after a year and a half.

My questions are:

Is there any microphone support for PS3? Any way I can get on a sort of teamspeak for raids? I know there was an option for this in DCUO on console.

I notice PS3 version gets a lot of hate. I am a veteran MMO player, and the controls seem pretty fluid to me with the exception of targeting enemies around a lot of ally players or npcs.

Are there any crafts I should pick up as a newb? I'm not sure which I should choose or what would make me decent gil. Haven't caught on how crafting works yet, can I Just be every craft like the class system?

I was surprised to see this game has pvp, I was under the impression that it did not, at least during beta. I can't imagine it's very good, but.. is it? lol.

1. I had some friends playing on PS3 either use a laptop with Teamspeak on it, or use the smartphone version. The smartphone version will set you back by a few bucks though. I am not sure if PS3 has microphone support.

2. It just gets hate because the loading times are slower than the PC version. Thus people who want to get moving and not wanting to wait for people stuck watching cutscenes or loading give you a lot of flak - "gotta go fast". Ignore them however. PS3 is perfectly fine to play with. There's also stuff like hotbar slot limitations, etc. But for what it's worth, I wouldn't be able to tell a PS3 player from a PC player anyway - they're all equally good to me.

3. I won't go into the nitpicky details of crafting, but starting out crafts are fine. Up to Level 15 per craft, you can get the materials you need from the guild supplier, for very little cost. Yes, you can pick up all 8 crafting classes if you'd like to.

4. I don't PVP, but I've heard it's not that great. That could be just me. I avoid PVP in any games like the plague, I'm more of a PVE player.

1. There is no vocal support built into the game. Since there are usb ports on the PS3 I imagine you could hook a mic up to it but I don't know how you would run something else in parallel.

2. The PS3 seems slower than high end gaming PCs. It is faster than mine, though. A bunch of my FC members use a PC with a game controller hooked up to it. So just ignore the hate.

3. It depends on your main adventuring classes. I've been leveling all 8 crafting classes but for Gladiator/Paladin the most important crafting classes will be Blacksmith and Armorer, both found in Limsa.

4. PvP wasn't in beta. The Wolves' Den was added in a patch. It is arena specific pvp - 4 on 4 matches. I haven't tried it either.

Ok thanks, 1 more question. Is it possible to power level in this? My bro runs a white mage (w/e it's called in this one) and has a lot of alts/crafts leveled if not all. We wanna get me fitted to tank asap.

Yes.
If you are in a party with a much higher level character you won't get xp from standard mob kills. However standard mob kills aren't the best way to level anyway...
The best way to level are to run dungeons, fates, and your hunting log. A higher level character can zip you through your hunting log. The dungeons and fates are level synced (so everyone is close to the same level) but having an experienced friend or 3 can get you through them faster.
As a tank you have an almost 0 wait time for any dungeon so you could just keep running them back-to-back through the duty finder if no friends are available to help.

A lot of threads in here complain about how quick it is to level to 50, so if getting there is your goal it should be quick.

Hi there. I have seen how is the game in the PS3 and how in my PC (A good one). So I hope to give you enough information about the main differences I saw between them...



If you have a good computer, try it on PC, because aside of having it more fluid you'll also enjoy having a keyboard whenever you need it (I appreciate it a lot in dungeons for example) and a gamepad, while in PS3 you only have the gamepad unless you buy a USB keyboard for it. But well, not everything is so bad in PS3, if you run it there you'll ensure your computer won't overheat (Especially if netbook)

In the graphical sense, I don't see any difference from my PC (Standard graphics) to PS3 (HDMI cable with 1080p TV).

It depends of your situation, for example with my PS3 I can enjoy of a big screen, I could play even from the couch without any problem. While in my computer the screen is small and to play for example from the bed would be a pain.

In short. PS3 version is not appreciated by those who have a good computer, but it depends more or less of tastes and situation. What it is truth is that a good computer has more options than the PS3, but aside of that the versions are very similar.

I have to say that, if you play PC version with a gamepad as it's my case, you won't find so much differences with the controls in the PS3 so that's more or less an advantage.

In a good PC the movement of everything is super fluid, the FPS is high at least with normal - standard graphic options and you have advantages for dodging. For example I have troubles dodging in PS3 because the FPS is a little low and the mobs do the actions 'paused-wanna-be'. Also it takes more time, the double of time to be exact, to load maps and those things in the PS3.

Not much to add here that has already been said. About 4 of us from our FC all play on PS3 and it is fine. Certain situations there is lag and dungeons do take longer to load because of the cutscenes. NPC's as well do take time to load at times but i think if someone had a ssd instead of a sata hard drive load times would be much faster. There is no microphone support from what i recall, however the PS4 version will ;)
Graphically i could not tell you if PC was better, but it looks great on PS3. And true unless you tell players your on PS3 they would not know.
PVP apparently is very bad, at least atm it is, given time it should be better.
As for crafting, any of them really can be picked up, myself i have always started with weaver first but i would suggest to take on a class that allows to craft your gear for your main class so it saves you money

No. The game doesn't have any built-in support for voice. (Neither PS3 or PC versions have that.) A lot of Free Companies set up a voice channel externally through Ventrillo or TeamSpeak or the like, but it isn't built into the game, so it varies between different groups. I play on PS3 but with a laptop next to me that I can use for vent or for referencing websites if I want to look up info. I've heard from a number of other PS3 players who do the same.

It's a lot better than its detractors try to make it sound. There are a few restrictions on having numerous UI windows open at once. The draw distance isn't as good as it could be on a good PC. And on most PS3's the loading screens take longer (though if you've upgraded your PS3 with a solid state hard drive, I've heard that takes care of that problem). The controls are actually pretty good once you configure them a bit and get used to them, but someone unused to them and with the default configuration can have difficulty there. (I remember I had a lot of difficulty with targeting when I started the game.)

The way to make that easier is to go into character configuration - target filtering. There are two sections, one at the top (the default) which lets you control what's targeted based on whether your weapon is drawn or sheathed, and a section below it for manually setting up to four targeting groups that you can switch between.

I'd recommend you disable the top section (about basing it on whether your weapon is drawn or sheathed). Then enable the section below and set up different targeting groups. For example, my system is set up so that L1+[square] sets me to target enemies only (useful for DPS or tanking) whereas L1+[circle] sets me to targeting players (useful for healing) and L1+[triangle] sets me to targeting everything. You can also include NPCs, objects, etc in whichever groups you want. With this mode of targeting enabled, you hit L1+(whatever) and then the left and right arrow buttons will cycle between only targets of that selected type. It remains active until you hit L1+(something else).

This way, when you've got enemies surrounded by players or NPCs (like during crowded FATEs) you can just set your targeting to enemies only and the other players/NPCs won't get in the way of your targeting.

It's worth picking up a crafting class (or several of them if you like) and trying it out to see whether you like the crafting in this game. Don't expect to make gil from it until you get up a ways in levels, though. And crafting is a gil sink instead of a gil source unless you also pick up the gathering classes to support it.

Personally, I prefer to look at crafting as a way of providing my own leveling gear, and if I can occasionally make a few gil on the side by selling off some extra pieces, well that's a nice added bonus. It seems the people who craft for gil (many of them at least) spend a lot of time complaining that they're not raking in hundreds of thousands of gil with every piece they make and the economy of the game needs to be "fixed" so that all other players are required to give them loads of money. That seems to totally miss the point of crafting as far as I can see.

It was added in the 2.1 patch. I haven't tried it myself, but it sounds like a bare-bones implementation of simple arena fights between two groups of four players per side.

Most PS3 players do get a keyboard, at least for chatting (though the controller is the more widely preferred method of navigation). USB keyboards are trivially cheap and far easier to use than the PS3 on-screen keyboard for controllers.

Very informative Niwa thank you, glad to hear I can setup the controls that way. It's exactly what I was hoping for. Seems all the PS3 hate is misguided, save for the loading times. Lvl15 now and still enjoying the game, just got the whole leve thing down. Curious, should I save the level 5 leves for when I 'roll' an alt aka swap to a different class? It seems they reset indefinitely, but I could be wrong. I've done two sets so far in the same zone for the lvl10 leves. That seems like a very good way to level alts.

I installed mumble on my android, I am hoping that I can just speaker voice with it because my headset is a USB. I have a USB keyboard, but I heard PS3 only supports PS3-made equipment, yet my headset works on it and it's a logitech.. I'll go try the keyboard. That would be awesome if I could type, because dungeons and such would just take forever to keypress on the PS default.

(post maximum characters) As a tank should I be pumping extra stat's into vitality or go a bit into strength too? My bro just says go vit but I don't think he plays a tank. I hear damage is vital to keeping aggro or 'hate' as well. I don't wanna have to pay for a reset as soon as I get 50.
