2nd job to gear undecided between BLM and SMN need some advice from the awesome guru'

OK so, my Main is MNK and my second WHM. However with 3 other healers ahead of me i rarely ever get to play healer (which im fine with), but this leads me onto which job to gear next.

When i first started SMN was my main, i was a good SMN, DoT rotation was great etc etc. However i havent touched SMN in ages, to the point i feel like its a new job all over again yet ive always had this affliction with SMN. I just really like them. Then i have BLM at 50 (before you ask no BRD is 15 and not high enough though i appreciate if going BLM BRD must have QS).

Im undecided which way to go. BLM is great at burst damage where as SMN is great at sustained damage. I dont intend to use any in turn 5 other than my MNK, but for primals like Garuda/Ifrit, ranged seems to be the prefered option (possibly Leviathan too? time will tell). So i decided its time to gear up a ranged class. I have 1500 myth, so by next week, (1900) i must use them, however i simply cant decide on which path to take.

Anyone be so kind as to help make this decision easier? I dont wanna play both and would like to concentrate on one and get it as good as i can.

any constructive points ont his would be greatly appreciated.

I main a smn and suggest going for blm. There is just something that feel more nukey and fun about playing a blm. SMN are visually very un interesting, half the time you don't even notice what your spells are doing because the animations are quite underwhelming and it feels like your killing mobs with pictures under their name rather then spells.

They should improve the animation skill of ACN more. The only skill that has a good animation is Miasma II.

You can do both SMN and BLM. The gear is very similar.

For example, SMN BIS from myth is Head, Chest, Hands
For BLM it is Head, Hands

Allagan Belt, Feet, Legs, Earrings are BIS for both.

SMN gets more benefit from Myth jewlery minus neck, BLM get more from Allagan.

I bought the BIS for both classes, and switch depending on need... ie, if there is a blm i go smn... if smn i go blm... if neither, i play what i feel like.

I know BLM is more flashy i mean in FFXI tornado 2 was O.O so yeah xD but im more looking at it in a versatility way. Benefit the group kinda way on primals etc. I know the animation aint great and the egi's are not the best considering past ffxi history but im more looking at the dps/effectiveness of either job. Since dropping SMN for MNK months ago i have lost all connection to SMN and having recently leveled BLM it has its merits but again i speak from inexperience of both jobs really.

My main is dragoon, and then I have BLM, WHM and PLD at 50. Being that I will finish filling Dragoon with i90 soon, I am going to hear my BLM next. It happens to be the 2nd class I leveled to 50, but I am going to start filling slots because I can also use a lot for SMN as well.

Starting next week, I will begin leveling off SMN and purchasing specific lv50 gears for the 2-3 week I wait to get it to 50.


What I've been doing per class is 2-3 weeks of leveling, then in that time I'll get weekly loot from CT for that job. Then I'll see what allagan or other items I have and fill spots from there. So after I get relic I am already close to i76-80 then from there I'll fill in myth/allagan slots I need.

Excellent answer, I'd been looking for info like this, as I'm already playing BLM, and would like to optimally gear SMN at the same time.

Thanks for the info! So ill go ahead and gear up SMN this week with the 3 pieces and then BLM with the other 2 pieces. I mean i hsould be able to get all 3 by next week and then that leaves the myth bracers/neck (unless ex primals are better?)

Then from next week i can start collecting for BLM. Though that BLM body will never drop >.>; lol

Actually the BiS for the SMN necklace is the myth one. As for the Head, Legs and Hands, there's still a debate going on, so we can't conclude yet.

Nevertheless, as long as it is i90, it is fine eitherway, as the "BiS" is only for min-maxing.
