It won't let me yet i see plenty of threads with more than 1000 characters... what's their secret?

Post a short one then edit it.
Type up your post. Copy and remove most of it. Post it. Go back to your post and click Edit. Paste the remainder of your post and re-post.
It's kind of ridiculous, but the only way.
